I'd never drive on Lake Michigan. Nor would I ever drive on a river. Too unpredictable. However, there are frequently stories about people getting stuck on ice floes on Lake Erie and Lake St. Claire. One I recall, the Coast Guard started evacuating people and wouldn't let them take any of their fishing equipment, snow mobiles, etc... a group of folks refused to leave. They hung out on that ice flow with their stuff for a week or so as I recall. People brought them clean clothes and food in boats. Eventually the wind shifted and the ice flow came back to shore and they all drove off.
