What did I break?

Welcome to TBN :D! Sorry about your RC :( from your described location of break I would tend to agree with Farmwithjunk (who really does not farm with junk ) and say it is the front u-joint yoke or maybe, but highly unlikely you have what I think is described as a radial pin slip clutch. I also agree with RoyJackson and suggest that you read your manual (His font play is new and disturbing to some of the old TBNtimers ). BTDT's suggestion for pictures would be helpful to the readership. John Bud and tuolumne exhibit the colleagiality (I think it is spelled right?) of the TBN membership. I will agree that breaking parts is scary and I would like to assure you that all of us TBN'ers (at least the honest ones ;)) will admit to a tractor learning curve (myself especially). Keep us posted- Jay

Oh, like I don't exhibit the collegiality like those other guys?

I just use the font to emphasize something of value.

It looks like I broke the yoke? (See pictures). If this is what I did, is it an easy fix? If the shear bolt goes through the yoke, I wonder why it didn't...shear? It wasn't really that BIG of a rock.

Thanks,
Slim

Yep that'd be the yoke. Looks like the yoke's on you. ( well someone had to say it.) Try a local drive line shop, they may be cheapest, or Agrisupply.com for a whole new driveshaft. Question is why did the $100.00 part break to save the $0.50 shear pin?

RoyJackson:

I look forward to all of your posts. You are quite informational as well as intertaining. Sorry if there was an implication of you not being colleagial (You even agree with me on occassion ;)). Jay

It was posted in a humorous vein, J...now I have to start using smilies too :D

WOW, the Yoke broke...and a bad pun too! (Thanks, Dave...that was pretty good)

Well, that's not too bad to replace...and Dave has a really good question...why didn't the shear pin go first? I suggest you replace the shear pin. It may have too tough a bolt through there.

And...for Jbrumberg...:)

No jokes about broke yokes blokes., ('er is that bloaks?)

Who was it that posted a picture of a broken yoke on a tiller just recently? Seems it was a defect in the casting. Even with a slip clutch or shear bolt, a BAD part may let go first.

I agree, while buying a new yoke you should get a hand-full of softer shear pins. I'd like to see what was used. Check the pin and see if it's a hardened bolt.. ie: what marks if any are on the head? it is possible the yoke had a previous damaging encounter with a bigger rock:(.. perhaps was cracked already? see if has any old rust in new break..

Roy glad you're around , always found your posts helpful and nice.. :D :D

2 things may have been the root cause. The shear bolt was too hard. Grade 8 used where grade 2 or should have been used. OR the slip clutch was rusted up tight and could not slip.

Can you please post a picture of the part that attaches to the mower? I would like to see if it was a slip clutch.
