So if back is jacked up and diff lock applied only one wheel should turn, correct?

Ok. You see, it is not that easy to state how it should work..Even if every thing is in perfect working order, and you jack up one side, then the tire that is in the air (has the least amount of resistance to turning) will be the one that turns. The other wheel on the ground will not turn. If you press the diff. lock both wheels "should" turn together as the bevel gears and axles are solidly locked together. Here is what you should do.. Jack up the left rear tire, start tractor and put it in gear, let out clutch. The left rear tire should rotate, and it should turn with the full torque the tractor is able to provide. If you step on the differential lock in this condition, the right rear tire should pull the tractor off of the jack,, but it likely won't because the right side is "broken" (by the way do this at idle). If the Left tire in the air does not turn at all , then the left side is "broken". I hope this helps.

Two possibilities come to mind. Either the differential gears have failed or probably more likely You have a sheared stub shaft in one of the final drives. See #1 and #11 in the diagram.

Yea that makes sense, I just wanted to isolate it to left or right side. How big a job is this? Thanks for all the replies.

In my opinion, and keep in mind it is just an opinion, and I am not a mechanic.. You have a broken axle or broken bevel gear on one side. this allows no force to be applied to the "good" axle side. because the broken side is so easy to turn and does not apply any power to the ground. Think of it like this, If you jacked up one side of the rear axle, only one tire (the jacked up side) would would turn, correct?. Now break that same axle or the bevel gear inside the differential that drives that side of the axle.. It would still turn inside and the tractor would still not move. Ok now step on the differential lock, the tractor lurches off of the jack as the "good" axle will rotate also and pull the tractor off of the jack.."Sorry to tell you this, but you have "big trouble" right here in "river city"

Yeah! Broken axle fits the symptom simply and exactly - and takes the problem outside the diff, which is probably real good. Easiest way to determine which side is in 2wd. Lock diff and pull against something that wont move The wheel that spins is good.
