Sooner or later I have to go in and get hearing aids.

Tonight, talking with my dad...

Me - "You saw a deer last night?"
My 87 year old dad - "No, I had a beer last night!"

uh, say what? What? Yeah tractor exhaust, gunfire (without cans!), rock concerts (ughh. Only went once, that was enough!) all take their toll. By the time you are my age it is "$3000, $5000, what ever they can get!" Yeah, that commercial comes to mind.
I might be down 3 dB down in the right ear, but the left ear is at least down 10 dB across the spectrum with a severe rolloff above 3khz for sure. Maybe even 15 dB down from say 600hz. It is best not to sit to my left if you want me to hear you.

Years ago I remember the lady conducting the hearing test getting up, walking over to me and pull the head phones off my head while shouting, you had to hear that cause I heard it over there. Some frequencies are totally gone. I blame it on climate change

I was sitting in the "soundproof booth" and couldn't tell if the tone I heard was the test, or the backup alarm on a piece of equipment outside. I've had ringing in my ears for as long as I can remember.

It's too bad that we hadn't heard of hearing protection 45 years ago. I now wear plugs and muffs when I'm running a chainsaw for any length of time.

I have lost some but not too much, mostly it is only an issue if there is background noise. I always thought that if I have to get hearing aids it would be some that look like a a Bluetooth earpiece. Then just take it off when I am not not needing it.

I use ear protection religiously these days and have most of my life. I did work in a mill when I was a kid before hearing protection was pushed and regret not knowing enough to provide my own. I know I damaged my hearing, even though I was young I could tell.

I'm as careful (and pedantic) about my hearing to a fault... which I credit to my years in the Navy and the PPE/safety gear you were required to wear. I was a Gun Fire Controlman/Tech.

However, the thing that got me and my hearing (loss & tinnitus) was the subtle sound/whine of the ship's ventilation as I slept! Years of 'sea time' took its toll.

Fortunately it's been recognised & covered by the DVA... all future hearing tests and aids (+ batteries) are provided for.

After all those years in artillery, my hearing has been gone for years. A real pain when I first met my wife, she was so soft speaking I had to constantly as her to repeat things. She adapted eventually and starting speaking up louder, but we rarely watched TV together because I cranked the volume up so high.

I finally broke down and got a pair of in ear aids that I wear when we go out or while watching TV. I would wear them more, but I'm kinda sorta dufus when working on the farm or on vehicles and I'm afraid I'll lose one or both.

When you see the lips move - quit with the "thousand mile stare" and blank look. They may be talking to you. I've noticed - starting about five years ago - my son has started mumbling an awful lot. At least, with the TV - I control the volume.
