What diesel oil rating does your manual require?

Hey Surge,

I don't think the "list" was intended as all inclusive, it was followed with:

( Other oils can be used if they meet minimum requirements of:

* API service classification CF4 + Mb228.1
* CCMC D-4 / G-4 / PD-2
* MIL - L - 2104E

Multi-Viscosity Diesel Engine oils are preferred.)

Also, the temperature chart shows oil as "light" as 0W30 for the most extreme cold, and "straight" 40 at the hottest extreme. The primary stipulation was that the oil used meet the proper diesel specs. No stipulation for or against synthetic oil... just meet the specs and use your favorite brand.

The manual does imply that 15W40 is the favored weight, and the factory fill is 15W40. The 15W40 multi-viscosity covers the temperature extremes here is North Florida quite adequately. After running-in an engine, I often switch to 5W40 synthetic diesel oil.

Phil- I must or have to ask. Why would you change to a 5w40 if using a lot after using a 15-w40? Unless you know the 5w-40 has a way better add pkg, better Kinematic Viscosity, better four ball etc. it just seems odd. I use 15w40 (group 4/5) all year around in Massachusetts and works great. Unless it gets below –16 F (pumping temp not pour point, I am fine)

The problem I see with straight weight oils is that most times the add pkg is poor since they want a true weight oil. I stay away from those oils.

Hey Mike,

When running-in an engine, I like to change oil frequently. I consider an oil such as Mobil Delvac 1300 - 15W40 more than adequate for my "short" change intervals. When time to increase change interval to the manufacturers recommended interval, Mobil Delvac 1 - 5W40 is my preferred oil.

I simply can't bring myself to use a $6.00 per quart oil for my short run-in change intervals. Especially when I consider that the $1.50 a quart oil I use for running-in the engine would be adequate for continued use after run-in.

I haven't experienced any oil use problems with 15W40 conventional oils or 5W40 synthetics... I use diesel oils that meet current diesel requirements. I'm currently operating / maintaining 5 diesel engines: Cummins in my Dodge, Chinese diesel generator, Lister (made in India) type diesel generator, 30+ year old Yanmar 2000, and my Mahindra 3325.

SURGE,
Direct from 3510 & 4110 operators manual:

API: CD/CE grades
Above 25 C (77 F) SAE 30W or 10W-30
0 C to 25 C (32 F to 77 F) SAE 20W or 10W-30
Below 0 C (32 F) SAE 10W or 10W-30

Is API: CD/CE grades older grades than todays oil ?

Ron
