>>The D1 is being replaced by this Nikon D2H

Yea, I know. I am hoping some D1H's will come on the market at reduced prices in an effort to get rid of them before the D2 takes over... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

i have a kodak, because of the docking station..loads pics to the computer very easily, but i don't like the part about pushing the button half way down etc..i guess they all do that? i wish they made the cameras bigger..i have a tough time handling such a small camera, so i still use my canon ae1 a lot..

I started with a Sony Mavica, went to a 2.1meg Olympus, and now have a 5meg Nikon Coolpix 5700 in addition to my 35mm Nikon. I found the Coolpix a bit complicated at first, but now that I'm used to the features it's pretty cool! And I absolutely love the USB download!

For those of you with the focus on a moving target problem, lock your focus on a fixed point in the image where your subject will be, and take the shot when the kid (dog, goat, etc) reaches that point. I've also found that locking your exposure AND focal point gives the camera less to think about and minimizes lag.

But for pure action shots, I still prefer my Nikon 35mm.

I have Nikon CP950 and CP995. Love them both, although I now use the 950 as a loaner for folks to try out.

There are several ways to reduce shutter lag.

Manual focus or as mentioned press partway down and then wait for the action.

Preset your white balance. Set it for sun or what ever. This eliminates the time required for the camera to figure out what to use.

Use burst mode if your camera has it. As mentioned, several shots taken quickly and you pick the best one.

If I were starting over and not concerned about easy carrying, I think I'd buy the Sony 717 or it's upcoming replacement.

Reasons:

Reasonable zoom range
Night shot
Laser assisted auto focus
Moveable LCD

One of the good websites about digital cameras, and there are several, is DC Resource at www.dcresource.com

RaT, I haven't seen any mention of the Canon PowerShot series. I've had my A40 for about a year and I'm sure that I've used only a minimum of its capabilities. It's only 2.0 MP but I have some excellent 8X10s(portraits and landscapes) printed out on a very inexpensive EPSON C40S printer. As you point out it's getting competitive but I've never been disappointed in this company, its products and its pricing. I'm getting ready to buy two comparable Canon cameras for my adult children for Christmas.

I'm on my 5th camera in as many years. Now have upgraded from Canon Powershot S100 to S400 (4 megapixels). Paid about $400 from J&R mail order. Gave the S100 to my son. I like the Canon Powershot because it is small and so I take it with me a lot. Has 3X zoom which is good enough for most of my photos.

At Costco you can get a 256MB compact flash card for under $50 and that holds over 100 pictures at highest resolution. I also purchased a small USB compact flash reader at Staples, and so I can slip the card out of the camera and put it in the reader and it looks like drive D: on my PC. Easy to move images off, etc. So with my laptop, camera, and reader (and image software -- I use Adobe Photoshop) I am good to go whereever.

Happy to share more experiences / tips if interested.

I just hook up the USB cable to my camera and it appears as a DRIVE on my PC, and I don't have to remove my card. I guess I really don't understand the need for a compact flash reader. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I have the Sony DSC-F717 which replaced the 707 (same basic camera but they tweaked the features a tad). I do not have the problem you describe with the shutter so it has to be either you are focusing the camera and releasing the button then pushing the button to take a pic which will force the camera to refocus again or you were just plain pushing the button without focusing to begin with. I take a lot of pictures of deer, birds and other wildlife as well as people and a couple 3 year olds and I have never had that problem with over 2500 pictures on the 717 so far.

As for the camera, the 717 is by far the nicest camera I have ever used in the under $1000 price range. If money is no object look at the Canon EOS 1ds. It is a great camera that is by far the top of the line for digitals and most reviews say there is no difference in the 1ds pic quality compared to the top 35mm cameras. Only drawback is the cost, $7k for just the camera body and then you have to buy the lenses but at least you have the option for different lenses.

I have a little Nikon 775 point and shoot digital that does great but it also has a lag. My dream camera is the Canon Rebel Digital. It is an SLR digital that uses the canon EOS Rebel lenses. It is a 5 megapixel SLR for $995 with a lens. My brother in law has one and it has NO shutter lag.
