Winches What do I do with my new winch?

So I bought this 3500 pound winch the other day when CT Farm and County was liquidating their stock. Most folks in the east are familiar with this company......

My question is. What do I do with it now

Attaching it to the rear end is probably the best place for me, but I'm open to suggestions on how to install it and where to put it. Any ideas? It did not come with any mounting hardware. It's just a winch in a box with no way to attach it as far as I can tell.

What type of power does this winch need, does it run off a 12V motor or is it PTO driven?

A friend of mine took a PTO driven winch off an old Jeep built a frame that he could connect to his 3PH or he could set it on the ground and chain to a tree. For power he used a 5 or 6 HP gas engine connected to a gear reduction unit that connected to the winch.

The possibilities are limitless, what would you want to pull to you that you can't drive to?

If it's 12 volt, put a hook on the base so you can attach it to either end (or the side if you get stuck like I do sometimes) /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Oh, sorry. It's 12V and the BX battery can easily handle the loads. It came with long cables to directly connect to the battery terminals.

As far as what am I going to do with it.....I don't know. It was a good deal and I always wanted one. I'll use it to skid some logs and pull myself out when I get stuck.

I don't have a winch on my Kubota but I do on my ATV. I use it for skidding logs when I am working in the bush and for getting unstuck when I have got into a predicament. I have also used it to get my Kubota unstuck a few times.

When I went to the dump (transfer station) last week there was a SuperWinch X6 (6000 lb) on the ground by the dumpster. Brought it home and it didn't work which did not surprise me. Opened the motor up and one pair of the brush wires was broken off the power feed bolt. Silver brazed it back on and it worked! These X6s sell for nearly $600 new. Not sure if my B7100 battery/alternator is heavy enough to handle it or not.

Nice catch!!! /w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif Those X6s are nice. I have an X3F. I don't think you want to test that winch on the wiring of your Kubota.

My X3F will dim the lights on my truck; it has a 60 amp alternator. But I could be wrong. Your safest bet is to contact Superwinch and ask them what the Amp draw is and then figure out what the output is on the Kubota dyno or alternator. I don't know if it matters whether there is a dyno or an alternator.

You just might be able to get away with it.

Rember that the size of battery is also important if the winch is to operate at the rated capacity.

The B7100 alternator is rated at 14V, 8.5 amps at 4600 RPS. (Alternator RPM's) Not sure what that comes out to in engine RPM's, but would guess around 80% of max.

The tractor should run it, as long as your battery is good. Just keep in mind that you'll suck the juice out of the battery pretty quick and it will take time to get back up to charge.
