2012 John Deere 1016, FEL, 60"MMM
I am new to all of this just bought me a John Deere 1026 r in May, with a FEL and rear box scrapper. I been tossing around the idea about getting a snow blower, think I could make some extra money doing people's driveways, plus use it for my own. I don't think the wife would spring for a brand new one but hopefully get a good used one for a good price. So tell me what should I get? A front mounted snow blower or one that hooks on to my rear PTO? What are the advantages and disadvantages of both of them.

How much snow do you get in MO?? Usually you need +8" before a blower become beneficial..

Here in VA we dont have a lot of snow most years - usally 2 or 3 <8' or less..

BUT I have a 2320 (not sure of the new model #) and all i use is a FEL and a homemade rear blade for snow removal.. We got three 12" snows 3 winters ago, and i had no problems clearing the neighborhood drives with my setup..

I added a 2x6 board to the bottom of my FEL bucket and another to the bottom of the rear blade so they wouldnt dig into the ground as much

Also you may want to consider the liability if you start charging for the removal hitting that decorative rock on someones driveway and throwing it thru a window could get cost more than you are charging.. a commercial insurance policy can be expensive, but worth it

Agree with thatguy I would not think MO gets enough snow to justify a blower. I use the FEL and a 6' rear blade that in the winter I remove the steel blade from it and replace it with a piece of thick rubber (horse stall mat cut to 8" wide the width of the blade) so I don't mark up my blacktop drive or friends and relatives concrete driveway. Couple years ago had a lot of snow here in Indiana and never had any issues removing it with what I have. Very good point made about the liability that might arise using a blower to remove snow for hire.

I've lived in central Michigan all my life and never had the need for a snowblower. There are times they would be nice, but I just can't justify the cost. A rear blade does all I need it to do. I plow mainly with my Gator and front blade now, which is even better. I think you'd be more than happy with either the front blade, which is more $$$, but a lot easier on the neck, or a rear blade, which is my choice.

I would never buy a new one but a friend of mine got a really nice used one at an auction for $600! I got a FEL and a rear box scraper, does a box scraper do a very good job with snow or should I just get a box blade?

You can't beat a blower for a nice clean job. Front mount is always better then rear, if you have that choice. I don't get a whole lot of snow here in NY, but I've always used a blower. In fact I am looking for a used one myself, for my X595. Nothing better then blowing snow on a cold winter night, in a nice heated cab.

i use a 3pt 5ft blade with 2 55 watt halogen lights looking forward and 1 55 watt one facing back to see the blade and i use the fel to clean up the mouth of my drive way and since i live on a dead end country road in the mountain i use the blade to plow the two lane rd and it works really good :tractor:

having a FEL and rear blade, can really do a lot. my problems here on the farm are the freakiing snow drifts. were there may only be 1/4" of actual snow on ground, but 6 feet deep large snow drifts. the FEL comes in handy but gets tiring going back and forth and getting through the snow drifts. for me a snow blower would work wonders.

on other hand. the rear blade, can be set and angle. and i can just go like no tomorrow, when the snow is not that deep.

the problem with snow blowers is the bloody wind, and then snow coming back on you. and being able to move a lever or switch, to adjust direction the chute blows snow can be a big one.

biggest investment for dealing with snow, is having a cab, or some sort of make shift wind break / shelter that goes on only during winter. just getting out of the wind, can make a HUGE difference. even if there is no heater.

you do get a crink in your neck with rear blades or rear mounted snow blowers. due to having to turn around to constantly look at things. and in that front mount snow blowers, or a snow blade on front can make a big difference in that respect.

sometimes it can just be better, to have a dedicated truck setup for snowing with a snow plow on the front. vs trying to deal with a tractor.
