If you really want a new machine, The Deere L111, Cub 1000 series, Simplicity Regent are all good machines in your price range. Or you can check out Craftsman/Husqvarna machines (they are clones). Or you can shop around for something slightly used at any of your local dealers and possible score a much higher quality machine that still has a lot of life in it.
