What do I want for Father\'s Day?

That was the question my daughter asked me tonight on the phone and I was totally without a clue. I thought since I've gotten so many great answers here to other things I'd come to you with this as well.

While she's just a new attorney having been graduated last month she's still playing the student role studying for the Bar Exam that isn't a consideration on a price range at all, she told me. She said she has her brother's rather substantial income to draw from if it's a bigger item and will gladly do that since he always wants her to do the legwork. He's fine with that since he'll do or pay anything to avoid the shopping experience. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

That all having been said, I really need some help here. I guess I've gotten to the point where I'm even difficult for ME to shop for, too. This is probably the toughest question I've ever asked here. I'm totally open for suggestions here. I remember how important it was for me with my parents when I first finished school and know she's probably thinking the same thing. I'm going to do some looking around online for ideas but I need some help here. I know I can count on TBN. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

How about this...

The kids, young and old gathered around. A nice breakfast with all. Then go for a putt on the bike... Maybe take a few of them on some shorter rides.

Then some more time with all the family, to realize what a blessing it is to be the father of such fine kids.

then, finish it off with a nice evening with the wife, and think about how lucky you are to have great family.

I don't want nothing, just the love of family. Ya can't buy that, or ask for it. It just happens by careful nuturing and caring.

Gary.........Forget the gifts ......... Have her over to spend "fathers day" with you if she can... . My kids ( 7&8) spend father's day fishing or doing other outdoor activities with me.........I savor every minute of it........My dad passed away when I was 22 almost 25 years ago........I was just passed my teen years ( The know it all years) When he had a heart attack..........I was just becoming best friends with him again when he died...........What I wouldn't give to spend another day fishing with him !! Start a tradition of spending the day doing something special with your kids...........After all, they're your link to immortality...........Just my .02 Tom

I'm afraid this year I won't get to see either of my children on Father's Day. My son is living and working in Monterrey Mexico into August and is currently recovering from a surgery he had there.

My daughter lives out of town as well and is hunkered down taking a prep course and studying for her Bar Exam next month.

I will try to get to see her for a meal sometime that weekend. I figure she has to eat anyhow and, though she can't understand this yet, it's more than worth the round trip drive to me just to have lunch and spend an hour with her. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

My daughter and her husband were over last night. I got hammered with the same question.

It's hard to ask for anything more. She's scheduled to deliver a big boy next Monday or Tuesday. My first Texas grandchild. All the rest are in California or Oklahoma.

If I'm lucky I'll have the kids feeling about me like I feel about my own dad. Well, no one's that lucky. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I told son in law to get used to combo presents, birthday--father's day. His is the same as my mother's was, June eighteenth. Mine and Leo of TBN fame are on the third of July.

My 10 year old son was hinting around the other day about the same. He's asking what kind of tools I needed as they all know how much I love tools. Trouble is, I'm pretty particular about my tools so I'd have to specify the make, model etc. then It's hardly a surprise for any of us. So I tried to steer him toward something they could use their own wisdom in selecting.

I hinted at wanting a charcoal grill for the house (have gas now and charcoal in the camper). My fingers are crossed /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I know last year for my dad my two brothers and I took him out for some steak and a few cocktails. I had to fly in from WV since everyone else is in northern WI. We had a great night. He knew he was going out with my brothers but did not expect me to fly up. He said it was one great Fathers Day. I would give anything to do it again but I can not this year. So I am stuck like your daughter is....what to get Dad for Fathers Day.

I'm somewhat in the same situation as you. I won't be seeing my kids either. My daughter is in Columbus, Ohio and my son is in the Navy stationed in Fallon, Nevada.

I always tell them that if I can't have them with me, then all I want is a phone call and maybe a card. I have added an occassional "unusual" request.

In your case, maybe you could tell your daughter that the best Father's Day present she could give you is passing the bar exam! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Every year I ask for the same thing. Never get it. I ask they my wife and daughter have a large construction dumpster delivered and I ask that they leave the house for the day.

My wife collects EVERYTHING that my daughter has ever drawn, made or spit up on since she was born. My daughter won't throw away broken toys, and won't donate used ones that she no longer uses. So every possible storage space in the house is slowly filling up with plastic storage bins full of things that will never be seen or used again. I am getting worried that the combined weight of all the "treasures" they are collecting will sink the entire house into the earth! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I thought i was the only one with that problem Bob. I keep waiting for my roof trusses to collapse anytime with all the junk up there.. You have to walk sideways in my house to get between stuff. You know what they say...Your stuff is junk and their junk is stuff. Anytime we do a cleaning around here and throw anything out , it's always my stuff thrown out. I feel your pain. I keep telling my wife that pretty soon there won't be any room for me here , but she just keeps collecting anyway. Maybe she is trying to tell me something.

Bob, I thought I had brain damage and forgot I wrote that post.

Darn scary.

I have started collecting large garbage bags full of stuff. Just this step alone has taken ten years to get to. One can guess what the next step will be, and it WILL NOT take tens years to get to.

With the time she's putting into preparation, I know she's doing everything in her power to make that happen. The last thing I'd want to do is add any more pressure to what must already be overwhelming. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I'd like to spend father's day with my daughter ,and son in Law. It's not going to happen , as they are both deploying . But It's a wish non the less . Any way , I'm keeping my hope up for Christmas !! John
