What do you do with used oil filters?

Well....as for filters-
We have 2011 Toyota FJ Cruiser that I just did the first oil change on. Has that cartridge filter system.
Enviro friendlier as there is no can, just the element. Huge PITA, much messier to change, takes longer and the filter without the can costs double what a can filter costs:confused2:

I think the same guy thought that up also thought up the new gas can nozzles..

I drain my filter into my drain pan...
After several days I put it in a plastic zip lock and take it to the dump...
Here in Catawba County they let you bring them oil and filters at no charge when placed in the recycle containers...
I only service my tractor so I only need to do this ritual once a year...

I leave them drain for a week or so then take em in with all my other scrap metal, nice to get something back.

Canister filters were used extensively in American autos until late 60's. Then the spin on type came out. Quess what, they were twicethe cost of the element only at the time.

Our local oil drop off facility charges $.50 per filter for disposal. I have paid to dispose of every filter I've changed except for the cartridge style. They get thrown in the trash.

Used oil is collected in a 5 gallon container. When full, I take it to Autozone and dump it into their collection tank. Used filters are drained and recycled into my metal barrel with all the other household metal (food cans, scrap and such) When full, the metal is sold as shredder steel for enough cash to pay for the fuel to get there. The aluminum cans and copper are my bonus money!!:laughing:

At the county trash facilities here we can dispose of as many as we want withing reason, if you bring a barrel full you will look like a business and be told no im sure. But i have put as many as 6 or so there at one time. You can also dump 5 gallons of oil a time. If you had 2 buckets im sure no one would say anything if you did not apper weekly like it was a business. I save my changes up and take 5 gallons of oil and about every other time i take the fileters as i forget.

I dump 5 gallons about once a year maybe a little more as now i use syn oil in the toyota and go longer change intervals between. I also push my changes in the saturn to 4k it seems. But the ranger and saturn use oil and i dont add it at the end of the change so both are usually a qt down when there changed. so in the saturn there is only like 3 qts in the sump after the filter is pulled.

I run a small roofing/siding/home repair company. I maintain a fleet of 4 business vehicles, and 6 family cars/trucks. I fill 2 55 gallon drums of drain oil per year, I give one to the local salvage yard, and one to my mechanic, and get empty drums in return. The filters I save in metal 5 gal buckets, and burn them in my outdoor woodboiler come winter. (along with all of the used antifreeze)
