What Do You Do?

Thank you, I would do it all over again, if I wasn't so broken from it, but besides getting injured, that was why I joined, to serve, not for the schooling. I met some of the best people I have ever met in my life in the military, and I miss it. Every day I thank god that I live in a country that we have freedom of speech, and can be free. After spending times in those holes, it really changes your outlook on life. I appreciate it, and were you in also? I see sgt in your screen name?

No not in but. 10 years in Full time EMS paramedic then 28 years in law enforcement. I was planning on Navy before HS graduation but Nixon ended Nam and family talked me out of it.

I worked on a farm and then in farm supply business for 8 years. Then became a police officer for 20 years. Since retirement, I have been driving school bus (18 years) and working for the state parks in grounds care for the past ten seasons. If there is a steeing wheel involved, I am a happy guy:)

Head buyer and Logistics Manager for my Family's company. 4th generation of the company as well, founded in 1919. We are one of the largest marketers (top 10) of Oils and Fuels in the United States.

Previous to that, I spent 1 year at Kent State University and 4 years at The Ohio State University.

Double major in International Studies - Intelligence & Security Counter-Terrorism and Modern North American History.

Been farming almost my entire life, grew up on a 700 acre cattle farm - family feud after my grandpa passed led to the farm being sold and my family given 30 days notice to move our stuff. (Yeah, I don't talk to that uncle anymore.) Since then, my dad and I farm about 120 acres for Hay and beef cows.

After graduating from elementary school (9 grades) I attended a technical school to become a telephone switchboard technician followed by two more years of school to get Associate degree in communication technology.
After working nine years for a telephone company I quit in 1974 I changed my profession by joining large instrumentation and process control company. More than tripled my paycheck but worked 5 days a week outside of home. I told my wife that I will do it only few years so we can save some money. We didn't save much. We just lived better. Bought a lake house, orchard, car, new furniture, vacations etc. Well 37 years, second wife and three different employers later I am still at it. Working all over the globe commissioning control systems for steam turbines and compressors. I love the job but hate the life associated with it. The plan was to retire last year but since I decided to built a hobby machine shop I postponed the retirement for about two more years to pay for it. As the saying goes: If you ride a tiger you can't get off. Still riding the tiger but hopefully getting off sometime in 2013.
My wife retired at 50 after 22 years with a big insurance company with modest pension and life time health insurance. Currently she is employed by our son doing insurance part of business for his company.

Grew up on a vegetable farm in upstate NY. Also worked in our family business in Farm supply all through high school and college. Ended up staying in the family business but in our hotel instead of the farm supply. Been at it almost 30 years, every day is different and it is much easier on the back than the farm or farm supply business, but can be highly stressful. Tractor time mowing pastures and fields, along with several hobbies (fishing and hunting mostly) help me keep my sanity.
I've enjoyed reading about the variety of professions listed here, hats off and thanks especially to all the military, police, fire and EMTs out there.

These days a ski Instructor in the winter and tree harvester in the summer. Back in the dark ages I didn't know what to do in college and fell into a computer science degree, thus am a former software developer of 25 years - for those who care to know, most anything unix et. al. and mainframe. More importantly, as I'd guess many TBN members are, I'm a obsessed tinkerer in the shop/garage, which is part of enjoying a tractor... Next to seat time, nothing quite like dreaming up and welding up a new device or modification.
