T-stat is set at 67-68. We have our own gas well with free gas, but seldom turn it up over 68. We do however have a woodstove and really enjoy keeping it burning over the weekends.
Wish I had my own gas well! Why burn wood instead of having a gas fireplace?
For practical reasons. We've been here 4 winters and haven't had an issue, but gas wells aren't 100% reliable like a utility. The gas is raw and wet. It is possible for the well head or pipeline to freeze up. I have to keep heat tape on my meter and riser to keep it from freezing up. The gas company may also find it necessary to take the well offline at any time for service. Gotta have a backup and wood is it.
We also have a dual fuel heat pump (electric for a/c and gas for heat below 40 degrees). In extreme situations (well down for and extended period),I can easily convert my furnace to LP gas. The plumbing is there and I have the appropriate gas orifices on-hand.
