T-stat is set at 67-68. We have our own gas well with free gas, but seldom turn it up over 68. We do however have a woodstove and really enjoy keeping it burning over the weekends.

Wish I had my own gas well! Why burn wood instead of having a gas fireplace?

For practical reasons. We've been here 4 winters and haven't had an issue, but gas wells aren't 100% reliable like a utility. The gas is raw and wet. It is possible for the well head or pipeline to freeze up. I have to keep heat tape on my meter and riser to keep it from freezing up. The gas company may also find it necessary to take the well offline at any time for service. Gotta have a backup and wood is it.

We also have a dual fuel heat pump (electric for a/c and gas for heat below 40 degrees). In extreme situations (well down for and extended period),I can easily convert my furnace to LP gas. The plumbing is there and I have the appropriate gas orifices on-hand.

day = 68
night = 64

It's zero outside, just figured out 5 recessed lights have been leaking mass quantities of heat into the attic ... another project beckons :cold:

First year in our house, the heat pump would kick on and run for 45 minutes until the heat strips kicked in. Electric bill was running close to $200. Realized every light fixture box in the ceiling was leaking. Climbed into the attic and realized there was only 1" of insulation over them. Insulation was only 3" deep.

For $800 and 4 hours of my wife and my time, we blew in a foot of insulation into the attack. For 1,800 sqft came to around 30 bags. Picked up 33 bags for good measure. And the last bag buried the main air duct for the heat pump.

When it's 10 degrees out, the heat pump will run for around 10 minutes. Insulation paid for itself within a year. The following year we updated the windows. That helped as well, but only a minor drop in the electric bill. The noticeable benefit of the windows were the rooms staying comfortable longer, and cut down on the chill.

We stay at 68 unless grandma comes for a weekend, then it goes up to 70, which feels pretty good. It might just stay there one of these days.

The cars stay comfortable at 42 in the garage.

Ours is set at 61. We supplement with a woodstove in the basement witch will keep the house at around 65 to 70 depending on outside temp. The colder it is outside the more the boiler runs. If it is below 0 they both run non stop. Sweaters and slippers are cheaper than oil. We save well over $1000 a year keeping it cooler

:thumbsup:I second that. The only thing better than having a gas well is having two gas wells.

Previous owners had a gas fireplace installed because of power outages which seems like a good idea at first.

I pulled it out and put in a wood burning fireplace because I love the radiant heat that keeps pumping out until it gradually cools and I throw more wood it. Gas is either on and warming me or it is off and I get cool as soon as the fire goes out.. I think I sit in front of the fireplace more than any other place in the winter.
