What do you NOT like about your Yanmar?

Right now the fact I have a blown head gasket, but on the plus side I really get to do some serious Yanmar surgery. I've got the head off and waiting for Len to send me parts. He is very helpful both in advice and quickly getting me the parts info. While I'm at it I'm cleaning the fuel tank, radiator, replacing fuel lines, checking the steering box,and doing all the required 600 hour services. I have 597 hours on the meter. One other thing I dislike, for some reason birds seem to like to build nests in front of the radiator.

I'll have to agree that a more open Operators platform would be nice. Once you're in there it's comfy (though my knee does tend to hit the Powershift lever when I clutch to change ranges), but if you're climbing on and off all the time it get's a bit tedious avoiding the range selector, etc.... (this is on a YM336D). Other than that, no complaints!

Most of the gear shift Yanmars have two ranges.... and therefore two reverse ratios. I think of my gearshifter's reverse speeds as "way too fast" and "way too slow". One will bore you to tears and the other one can sure test your adrenalin output. Of course you learn to deal with it, but I consider it to be either a charming personality quirk or evidence that someone in the engineering dept. has a sense of humor. (not likely)

The cure for the reverse races is the powershift transmission. Powershifting Yanmars have 3 or 4 reverse gears and the middle two are friendly. In fact, the top one isn't bad either.

I agree that powershift is the way to go, and that the reverse for each range doesn't necessarily "matched" to the range, and that the 1st and 2nd ranges are "friendly". The Creep is great too for backing up to implements, trees, etc.... HOWEVER, 3rd (high) reverse in a YM336 is quite a rush /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif unless you're on level ground and are planning on going straight back...and then it's just keeping the throttle low and wheel straight. BUT, it is nice to have a gear set that high, too /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif .

I havent had the pleasure of using my 1401 for working ground yet. It sure is a race car in high 3rd though. And could use some inbetween gears, but still makes me happy. I will probably step on a lot of toes by saying this next part, but I am kidding keep that in mind, but maybe we could start a new club on here....yanmar diet club. I am fairly new to yanmars but have a F15 and F16 and I tend to notice mechanical things more than cosmetic/convenience items. I noticed that the hydraulic pump on these tractors is driven off of the back of the fuel injector pump. That troubles me especially when using these tractors for loader work. Heavy usage could potentially cause problems like sheared off injector pump drives etc. Hasn't happened yet, but not the way I would have built it.

You have to remember that weight is a good thing with these little tractors. OK the operators seat puts the weight kind of high up. If weight = traction pass the beer and chips./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

I guy I know was getting off his 1610-D
when his foot hit the shift lever while his other foot was on the ground.
Next thing he knows ,the rear wheel is climbing on his other leg on the ground!!
He says the tractor ran him over, starting at his foot,knee ,thigh, rib cage,and shoulder.
The only thing that saved him, was that he was in about 8" of mud!
He had bruises every 5 to 6 inches all the way up his body..He said the first thing he did when he got up, was to look around
to see if anyone saw it!! (saved by the mud)

Ernie, I can sure see that happening. Glad he is all right. I've had a few stupid experieces myself....though not that particular one. All those compacts built in the first couple of decades had the gearshifts down between a fellow's feet. In fact - now that I think of it - most of the tractors built last century did too. I notice that the newer compacts (Yanmar included) have the shift somewhere else. Even the typical dash-mounted PowerShift would have prevented that accident.

Anyone know what the top speed is on the ym1700?

I guess that would be 8th gear?

I drove it from my house to a shop down the road a while back for some minor work... and was amazed at how fast it will travel. My bigger hew holland 1920 will go 18-21 mph in high range.... my little yanmar felt like it was going somewhere near this... 16-18mph maybee?

I would drive it down the road and have my wife follow me.. but i wouldn't want to see that look on her face again... and try to explain why i need to know this info...

You guys know how it goes...
