WHAT DOES A PALLET OF SOD WEIGH?

Your a real thinking man, I like that. In regard to 2,200# total rating. We already know Bobcat has under rated the Toolcat by the email I sent to you last week. (FEL rated at 1500#, but said to be engineered to lift a 2,000# pallet)

You know I was thinking about fabricating a suit case weight rack that would install in the 2" receiver in the rear of the Toolcat. Sort of the way tractors add individual suitcase weights to the front of a tractor.

I would imagine that hanging 500# 24" off the rear of the Toolcat would do more to shift weight off the front than 1000# in the box. Mainly do to increased leverage.

Because the Toolcat operator sits so far forward I think you could only count a small % of that weight as ballast.
(Unlike the CUT operator that may get 125% benefit from sitting so far back from the loader)

I got a pallet today, and I'm going to put (4) sides on it and put a plastic liner inside. Then I'll simply use a home scale and a 5gal bucket to weigh out 2,000lbs of soil. When my unit arrives I'll conduct a few tests of my own and report my findings.

MY GREATEST FEAR: I get in my new Toolcat, connect to my new forks, drive my new forks under that 2,000# pallet, push my new throtle lever forward to max RPM's, and with a great big grin /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif pull back on that Joystick like a 747 about to leave the end of a runway /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif....................Only to be devistated by the fact that not only can my new Toolcat not lift the pallet 60" off the ground!? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif..............It can't lift it at all!! /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

If that happens and you see a used Toolcat for sale with less then 1 hour on the meter it'll probably be mine. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I don't think that's going to happen. I think the Bobcat company is reputable enough that if they say the Toolcat can lift the 2k pallet, it will. I don't think the marketing guys would know any better, but hopefully they've been getting the information they gave us from their engineers.

I don't think the C series will have any problem lifting 1 ton to a 60 " height (now whether it can lift a pallet of wet sod remains to be seen! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif). The reason I say this is because I have seen what the B series can do with the 1400 lbs. Brushcat. It lifted it to maximum height without even hesitating...it even curled it without any problems, and I think that is way beyond the rated limits.

I've seen our local sod farmers use all different sizes of pallets while harvesting sod.

Around here when you say a pallet of sod,(South Texas) your talking about approx. 400 sq ft. coverage. They are cut into pieces approx. 18"X24". For some unknown reason I have never seen rolled sod used around here.

Or in Florida either. Stacking them flat will make for a lot heavier pallet, if stacked to the same height. You don't have all that air space in between rolls. I wonder if the folks that have mentioned weight for pallets were talking about rolled or flat?

My tractor will lift 900 lbs. So I find a lot of pallet full of just about anything it will not lift. I have never lifted sod. But just about all the landscape industries put on a pallet seems to weigh closer to 2000 lbs.
Out of a chance I did a search for "pallet of sod" here on TBN. Bingo /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif Here is a thread on how much they weigh. Click Here A couple of others came up with similar responses.

Good luck with that. Ask the sod guys to bring extra pallets for you to hand bomb the sod. A full skid of fresh damp sod is around 3000lbs.

Better yet have the sales guy over at your place to do the hand bombing for you.

Dont confuse Factor of Safety with operating capacity

considering the thread is 15 years old, I'm sure he has already laid the sod and probably watered and cut it and couple of times since then.
