What does "locally grown" mean to you?

Grown in my back yard! I'm picking peaches right now.

Peaches were a bust this year with late freezes, got ONE.
We did pick a bunch wild black cherry for jelly and the wild plums are almost ready.

400 miles is way too far, no way that's local, that's a useless definition to me

We have a roadside produce stand near us. All their produce is exactly the same thing we can get at Walmart. They told us excitingly "Our tomatoes are from Florida!!!!" as if that is supposed to be the best ones, ever. They were flavorless, just like the ones at Walmart, and their signs still say "locally grown."

We have greenhouse grown tomatoes from a place about 150 miles from here, but they still taste like cardboard.
There is nothing like a tomato just off the vine, probably because they'd crush themselves during shipment.

Nothing like a homegrown tomato. The tomatoe's at the Farmer's Market next town over are better, but they're still green house grown by the Amish. We grow our own, of course, but to resort to a few from the Market until ours are mature enough to harvest and eat.

Folks in Texas are getting screwed! That could be 801 miles, in the extreme.

I'd say Alaska too, if anything grew there.

Alaska comes to mind at 2700 x 1400 (ish) miles, though Hawaii at 1,500 (ish) miles comes close...

Depends on the chain. Back in the 90s I worked p/t in the produce dept. of a chain supermarket (Hannaford) when I was between careers. The store managers had some discretion as to where to get their produce, and we used to get a lot from relatively local farms...tomatoes, corn, cukes, etc. All of them within 25-30 miles. The regional managers did ask that stores within a given district use the same suppliers for consistency between stores (and no doubt better pricing). In most cases we'd have signs stating where it was from. The one exception was corn from one particular farm...he charged more at his farmstand than we did for the same corn, so he didn't want customers to know we were undercutting him on his own product. We did not jack up the prices...it was the same as if it had come from our warehouse.

Our main competition, Shaws did not have that flexibility...they had to take what the warehouse sent, and a lot of their "local" produce came from N.J or Conn. We'd kind of poke fun at them on the announcements on the PA system.


Yeah, that sounds about right.

I uses to deliver fresh picked corn to a couple Hannaford grocery stores in Vermont when I worked for a local mom and pop farmer.
