I've used a Kubota that was a GST. I've used a shuttle shift. (didn't really care for either given my circumstances)

Those were not our machines, I just had chance to use them.

My backhoe has a shifter, don't know if it has a name. It's like a turn signal on the left side of the steering wheel. It's electro-mechanical.

I don't have any clutch, zero none. I just click it forward and I'm going forward. Put in middle detent and I'm in neutral. Pull it backwards and I'm in reverse.

Makes loader work pretty darn easy.

I've seen a Kubota (for sale that I'm eyeballing) that says it has this "Swing Shift" and I'm trying to figure out if it's like my electro-mechanical backhoe or someone using the wrong terminology for the shuttle shift?

BTW, the Kubota for sale is a MS-9540 if that helps

It's called shuttle shift. Someone, more likely a salesman that usually doesn't know anything, is just using the wrong terminology.

I was fearing that.....but, HOPING that it was electro-mechanical.

Does my memory serve me in that you have to clutch between F/R??? or can you just "swing" it on the fly??

On that particular tractor is Hydraulic Shuttle shift. This means you have two clutch packs that runs on an oil bath, one for reverse and another for forward movement. You can swing it on the fly. The "clutch" pedal is pretty much only used to do precise movements, lets say you are placing a pallet on a tight space with the loader and you need to make slow movements. Is also used to change between gears and range, and to come to a complete stop or to take off slowly, as in High range, otherwise it might stall the tractor and give you a really high bump.

To be fair, is not really a clutch pedal as these tractors doesn't have a dry clutch. The pedal, when pressed, just sends the oil flow directly to the tank so none of the two clutch packs gets engaged.

Not sure if I explained 100% correctly but I'm up to corrections.

The M9540 does not require clutching. It’s a hydraulic shuttle.

My 2009 M6040 has what Kubota calls - Hydraulic shuttle shift. You may shift between speeds on the go but the clutch must be used. You can shift between ranges - must come to a complete stop - must use the clutch.. The hydraulic-shuttle shift lever will change directions( forward - reverse ) - DOES NOT require the clutch - only to be used when the tractor is moving slowly.

"Swing Shift"--dates to days of WWII. Means a work shift from mid-afternoon to midnight.
Never heard the term used in connection with CUTs.
