Making cracklings and getting sick from eating so many
Likewise. We did it all on the farm, nothing was hired out, we didnt have the money. Most kids today know nothing about anything (except video gaming and computers) mostly because their parents haven't taken the time to teach them. Just like in the insurance commercial where the kid has a flat tire and doesn't even know what a lug wrench is. Most kids don't live on a farm or have never been exposed to farm life so they wont know how to do anything on a farm.
I grew up on a farm, fixing things that broke by either mechanical skills or welding, driving tractors, doctoring animals, milking, slaughtering etc. We did it all on the farm and bought very little from stores, mostly flour, salt, coffee and sugar, the rest we grew ourselves. I don't think I could be that self sufficient today. But I did teach all my kids (boys and girls)how to do minor mechanic work on cars including changing a flat tire.

I have to agree with GF. Most kids today know very little about anything. If it isn't on their smart phone - they will have no knowledge of it. AND farm tasks are only a very small portion of what they don't know. Yaa - the kid didn't know what a lug wrench was...........and so the world turns. He was probably lucky - had he known - probably would have killed himself changing the tire.
Whatever they are being taught in school today - it has very little to do with "making their way in life". Saw an article yesterday that somewhat represents the way things are today - "the ten vehicles that are lemons even before they leave the new car lot".
