I always thought of HOAs as more of a "suburbia" thing. A big part of why I live in the country is to get away from that nonsense.

Which is why I was wondering how a home with 15 acres could be written into a HOA.

Happening here in FL more and more.
A lot of rural developments are popping up as 5 to 10 acre lots zoned for horses only (no other livestock) and they all have an HOA.

I for one do not understand it.

In FL, 90 percent of new homes are built in an HOA community.
It is so prevalent that right now 43 percent of all existing homes in the state are controlled by an HOA.

^^ Like I said on the other thread, they're a way for control freaks and demigod wannabees to act like a government without being a government and subject to the checks and balances. Gladys Kravtiz on a power trip.

Here's my naive, small world philosophy about such things as HOAs.

Humans by nature are herd species. Tend to gather in groups rather than seek soltitude. I would venture that 99% of new houses built are located with that in mind. Those people are also frightened by the prospect of being self sufficient. They expect the "establishment" to take care of them and definitely to keep others "in line". House design, color, roof type, etc., etc.

Many people here on TBN claim to live in the country, when in fact they do not. HOAs, zoning, permits, inspections, the list is lengthy.

I am so greatful that this occurs. It's population control in my area.

A Texan bought 80 acres of land near me. Built a $400K house with no easy road access. Asked the neighbor if he could drive across him during construction? Sure. Neighbor drives by one day and sees a dozer building a road on his property. Pushed back and stopped access. Texan never moved in. Property is now for sale. He says people up here are just rude and too different to suit him. :confused3:

No intended slam against our Texan friends. Just happened to be where he was from.

I was in a burb with HOA for the last 15 years of my working life. Convenient for being very close to work for both wife and I. One of the main reasons I sold and moved out of the burbs was the HOA. I fear it's eventually going to be a nightmare for some as that neighborhood ages and private streets need repair.

Flash back .... 'The 'Burbs'. Cool movie and in many ways right on target with this thread.

In a previous lifetime I was in an HOA with ten acre lots minimum. Did I know I was in an HOA? Laws then, did not back disclosure. I only found out years later after someone knocked on my door. Heck, the community was still under development at that time. It got a lot more interesting after that knock. And not for the better.

Laws in my state now are full disclosure. HOA's have to be documented.

This was not in what I would consider to be "suburbia" at the time, nor even now, a decade plus later.
