What Height Do You All Cut Your Grass?

I cut mine at 3" all year ,requires less water, chokes out the weeds, always feels cool on a hot day.But it does look long two days after a cutting.Better looking a little long than too short and having weeds take over.

I admit we cut ours to less than three, perhaps 2.5. Taller than that and you can't find the dog poop.

You fellows need me to apply my Brown Thumb to your lawns. Sprayed mine last year and killed it. Obvious I am not familiar with sprays.

Normally I set the mower as high as it will go.

NIXON . . . there are a few brands on the market that are not manufacturered from chemical or petrol bases. The most common, but not a particularly good brand, is MALORGANITE. It can be found at some of the box stores. The reason I say it is not particularly good is because some information I've read states that some of the nutrients are derived from sources like sludge compost, but that is not something I've seriously researched.

There are also numerous fish and kelp based fertilizers on the market under several brands, they are often hard to find unless you source out some of the organic gardening catelogs.

Bob . Thanks for the reply . Sludge compost ... I believe I'll go with Doc's idea . At least I'll know where it comes from /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif John

The master gardener recommendation is around 3" for cooler season grasses and around 1" for hot season grasses like bermuda and zoysia.

I cut my grass at 2 1/2-3" during the summer and 2" at start and end of season.

I cut the trails, which are mostly wild fescue, down along the creek at 2 1/2". Stuff grows great, no watering, no fert, nothing.

I throw on milorganite in the fall onto grass here around the house, approx. 1/2 acre of fine green mixture mess but looks good. The green includes some dandelion, chick weed, crab grass, lots of good green stuff.

My father has consistently had the best lawn in his neighborhood without using any fertilizer or weed-killer at all. He is adamant about letting the grass grow tall in the spring, mowing it as high as his mower will allow. He lets the grass "go to seed" (if that is even botanically possible) at least once in the spring then mows it very short in the summer and reverses the length for the fall. He also bags (or rakes) all his clippings. He claims that the tall grass in the spring chokes the weeds and encourages strong root growth. And he insists that the clippings are more of a long term problem then anything else. While I don't agree with some of his theories, I can't argue with his results.

I would have to disagree with him on this one. Grass clippings break down quickly, and are a free source of nitrogen.

To use teen-talk, bagging clippings is old-school. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
