This is a hypothetical question...

I've got three speed settings on my PTO. What would happen if I ran a 540 RPM PTO pump at a higher speed...say 1100 RPM?

Would I get more flow less pressure?

More flow a the same pressure?

Just a big mess?

More flow, more pressure - assuming you have the power to spin it faster. You will want to have a good relief valve in the pressure line. Check pump pressure spec and set it below that. If its a hydraulic pump you should do some homework to assure it can handle overspeed w/o cavitation.

You might be headed for disaster though.

You should get more flow up to the fluid flow limiting sizing's of the pump. Maximum pressure should stay the same unless it is a PD type pump.:D

You may also want to consider a cage to catch all the pieces if it disintegrates!:D

Next dumb question: What's a PD type pump?

How is it different from others? Why would it make a difference?

PD = Positive displacement pump. If this type of pump is speed-ed up the increased volume flow resistance will increase the output pressure on an ongoing basis.

On a centrifugal pump this pressure will increase to a certain degree but stop increasing when the pressure limits of the vanes or stages are met.

My understanding of a PD pump was one that displaced a set volume of fluid per revolution, like a gear pump.
If this is correct then would it produce full pressure at any volume, the max pressure being set by the tolerance of the gear lobes.

Your pump would probably cavitate then grenade.
