I'm also using VSO Image resizer.

Im using vista.

To resize i use MS Office Picture Manager. I also use it to correct colour balance or red eye if necessary.

I bought a copy of ACD Systems software called ACDSee way back in the early '90s when I began doing multimedia. I like it for browsing and quick editing as long as it is simple. There are many good products available, but ACDSee is what I know and it works well. Why should I learn anything else?

The number of programs, most being "free", that will suffice are, well, huge. In Vista, Photo Gallery and Paint work, as does just opening a photo (say, in jpeg, bmp, tiff or whatever), and then selecting among the options for saving the image. Picasa is easy, and a free download in basic form. Most CD or DVD "burner" programs (say, NERO) have file compacting options. Basically, whatever you have pre-installed on your computer usually contains something that will work, and if not then there are a number of free, downloadable programs that will suit your needs. Heck, even my camera comes with a program that will suffice.

Rarely I do I just resize, most of the time I'll crop out the unwanted and then resize.

To do all that, I use an old copy of Paint shop pro(v6). It's been my photo editing software for many years.

Once you get use to where all the buttons are, it's hard to change to something else.

I like Picasa. You can export to another location resized (for upload here), email batches of pics, crop, perform other edits of the pictures, all without either having to make a copy of the picture or changing the original. Its great!

I have, here on my desktop:
  • ACDSee (ver3 from 1999, their fastest) my everyday viewer and occasional quick-editor, for example, rotating or crop/resize.
  • Irfanview (good for quick edits and batch stuff),
  • Photoshop Elements3 (when nothing else will bring out shadow detail),
  • Paint.NET, my favorite editor, except for when I'm desperate to salvage something out of nothing, and need PSE3's extended capabilities. I think the pictures edited with Paint.NET simply look better that anything else.
  • CompuPic Pro and XnView (really good viewers but I never use them. They might be top choices if you wanted to use their indexing capabilities.)
  • Exifer (simple viewer that shows all the EXIF details - even edits them!)
  • and finally, Porta. This is the best automatic quick-album maker I've ever seen. It takes a folder of photos, and resizes with a subtle amount of sharpening that makes the album pix shine. The album is created automatically, in an instant. Example.
  • I also have the Microsoft Power tools right-click resizer installed but never use it. Its resized pix arent as sharp; seem mushy.
I tried Prish and PIXresizer based on the comments above. Prish left jagged zig-zag lines along edges when downsizing anything with sloping lines - same as oversharpening with a real editor. I uninstalled it.
PIXresizer works as expected. I like it, and may continue to use it. It certainly meets the standard of simple to use.

VSO Image resizer sounds good. I'll have to try it out. Picasso sounds good but I'll probably never get around to trying it.

And finally, I'm gradually learning to take pictures that are composed right in the first place so that simple resizing is the only improvement needed. Combined with a better camera (Panasonic TZ5) I'm enjoying photography now more than ever.

What other resizers are people using?

Photoshop with defined actions. It takes the picture and does to it whatever I do manually. I don't use it for important pix, but for forum publishing it works well enough. If I have more than few, I run it as a batch. Effortless and fast.
If you are using photoshop, action is one thing you should definitely learn.

For any mac users out there looking as well.. I found that iResize works great - it will do individual pic or an entire batch.. Its a free download and you can also adjust the size of the pics to what you want..
