I am buying a JD 5525 (75 hp PTO) with loader. Have a shredder and post hole digger already. What else do I need to maintain my coastal fields. Only have about 60 acres of coastal fields. Rest of my place heavy south TX mesquite brush. Thanks for the advice.

When you say 'maintain' what all do you plan on doing.

If you solely 'mow' them.. sounds like you have the mower already.. plus a good fencing machine since it has a loader and auger.

A FEL also does much of the work a box blade can do. unless I had a driveway to maintain.. then a box blade or rear blade probably won't be needed.

You don't need a boom pole cuz u got the loader.

You don't need a rear scoop cuz you got the loader.. ( unless you plan on digging native soils )

There are a variety of rakes, and drag and sick harros as well as plows that you -may- need if you ever plant crops.. or reseed.. etc.. but just maintianing a field.. hmm.. pretty much only think you may need that comes to mind is a fertalizer spreader??

Also.. a rake/tedder, sickle bar / disc mower and a bailer ( mowco , haybine.. etc ) and then you can make hay..

I agree with all of the above except the fertilizer spreader. Unless you buy a pretty good sized fertilizer buggy, you'll have a heck of a time putting much down on 60 AC. Most dealers rent the buggies with the sale of the bulk fertilizer and many will spread it with truck mounted spreaders. Coastal likes fertilizer and at 3-400# per acre, even with a 4-ton buggy you'll still make a lot of trips to the fertilizer store.

We burn our coastal fields every third year or so, and you need a good disc harrow to make firebreaks. The harrow also comes in handy when overseeding with rye or rye grass for winter grazing. I agree with SG that you need a fertilizer spreader. Not necessarily a big one, but sometimes you might want to fertilize a small patch, like a two acre bullpen, or a few acres of winter grazing. It is hard to get the truck out for small acreages sometimes. If you are fertilizing the whole 60 acres it would certainly be better to get the truck out to put it on bulk.

Seventy-five hp is a good size for that operation. You will probably want to add a smaller ag utility, in the 30-40 hp range later.

I've always found that I need about six more implements than I can afford.

Sorry this doesn't help ya.

For many of us the implements cost more than our tractors...

Reminds me of my Nikon, the lenses are much more expensive than the body :)

For me the issue is space, I really want to justify a box blade but I have no place to put it except out in the rain until my house is built. And until I pave the driveway the loader can clear the snow so a front blade isn't needed. After I get the basics I can drool over the stuff I can't afford.

The glass is more important than the camera body. At least that's what I keep telling myself so I don't try to upgrade my Canon 400D to a $4,500 EOS-1D Mark III!!

Problem is, I can't even afford the basics. What ARE the basics anyway?;)
