Uh...I am the wife, so I suppose I should just lurk on this thread, hoping to learn some techniques on convincing the spouse to buy, but....
Ah heck, I'm the spender of the family. We both make a nice salary, and we have his and hers bank accounts. His are bigger....because I'm the spender /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif. And because he recently passed me in income. For the first 13 years of our marriage, I made more than him, but now, he makes more than me...and he is responsible and saves.
I'm not exactly sure if there is a dollar amount on major purchases. I guess around $750 is about where I'd draw the line.
Currently, I'm building a new farm for us and sold the current one. I am looking for a new tractor, and sadly, I have to convince him that I can afford one.
I doubt if our arrangement would work for 99% of the couples out there, but it mostly works for us. We need to re-evaluate the bills once we get into the new house and figure out who pays what and probably set up an annual re-evaluation. We ended up with a bit of inequities in bills because when we bought our farm 11 years ago, he took the (fixed) mortgage, and I took everything else. Everything else got bigger, the fixed mortgage did not really, other than refinancing to a 15 year, but at lower rates. But...since I haven't had him adjust his withholdings, and I keep the tax return, that is my annual equalizer. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
