My SIL is doing pretty will with embroidery machines, the ones that make custom embroidery on clothing, coats, hats, etc. There is an up front cost for the machines and clothing, but she has expanded every year.

If you don't mind having little kids around, would you consider opening a daycare in your home? There is good money in it, but the down side is the load on your septic system, and dealing with all the colds and illnesses they will be bringing in the home. Check what state and local authorities require to see if it is too much of a hassle to meet requlations before getting too involved. Can also be a daytime in-home care giver for an older person, or handicapped person.

If she is just looking for something to do and money is not a major concern, she might be interested in volunteering her time at a hospital, or nursing home, or library.

I saw a thing on TV the other day where this woman was sending out dog poop through the mail. She made a web site and for a fee she will mail someone you have a beef with, a package of poop from one of her 2 dogs. One is a Border Collie, and the other one is possibly a Great Dane or some other big dog. She charges more for the larger dog's droppings.

I am not trying to be negative here but offer some practical advise. BTW I run a business from home.

Is the wife looking for a "job" she can do from home or for a "business" that be run from a residence? There is a difference!

A "job" is where you are paid by an employer to do the work they assign. Some of the suggestions already made like typist, medical transcription, etc. You can now even get some "call center" jobs you can work from home.

Starting a business is a whole different thing. Just because you "start" a business doen't mean you will make any money. You will have accounting to do along with paying taxes. Zoning can be an issue.

Some of the suggestions like crafts or candles can be good choices if you have a market to sell to. You can set it up as a small hobby operation or get larger. But if you get larger and need employees do you want them in your home? I am struggling with that issue myself.

Also don't forget safety. Large pots of hot wax in your kitchen may be a danger. Wax burns!

Last but not least if you are going to start a business do a business plan before spending a lot of money. It does not need to be very formal but should include: who are your customers, competition Cost of materials, sales price, what is your labor worth. It is very easy in a "crafts" type business to create a product that you can sell for what looks like a good markup only to find you have been working for $1 per hour.

with my one Weimeraner, I have enough to supply a small sized town. If you would like to pay the postage, I will send you a sample. I just dumped a 35 gallon trash barrel from cleaning up all summer.
