I will say this Robert my neighbor went and bought a single cab toyota around same year as mine, just off knowing how great mine has been for us,well he called me yesterday and wonted to know if he could come look at mine and use the manual. I guess what I am getting at, its not going to matter on the older 4x4 what brand but is going to come down to how the vehicle was taking care of and then it just may be time for it to lay down. The 22r or 24r,four banger would be really cheap to rebuild if had to and really simple to work on yourself even if not that machanically incline as myself:D I would look and whatever brand it maybe,if its nice, solid, buy it and then become a member of AAA...

Here is my experience with mini-trucks.

1986 Toyota 22 R 4 Cylinder 4x4. Pulled like a V6. 200,000 miles and the only thing changed was the slave cylinder on the manual tranny. Traded on a Honda Civic. 25 mpg

1986 Ford Ranger 3.0L V-6 4x4. Pulled good and did everything needed. No issues in about 70,000 miles but was totaled in a crash. Not our fault, dad was at the wheel. Low 20's mpg

1989 S-10 Blazzer 4x4 4.3L. Traded on the Toyota listed above at 35,000 miles after having the motor replaced and the transfer case failing severing the drive shafts and nearly taking the rear axle out from under it. POS 15-18 mpg.

1999 Dodge Dakota 2 wheel drive. It was my work truck, traded at 120,000 on the cash for clunkers plans on a Toyota Camery. AC issues, I think compressor, and had a tranny replaced plus it rusted badly at the rear fenders and was repainted then rusted again a year later. 15 mpg

If I were to do it again it would be a Toyota 4 cylinder.

Used to have '91 ranger rcsb for a commuter 2 wheel drive 2.3L/5 speed. I'm 6'1" and Leg/Head room was tight. Mileage was mid 20's on the freeway. I drove it from 1999 to late 2003 and sold it to BIL for first car he hit a deer couple of years ago and finally killed it. Other than a couple of alternators, a clutch, a fuel pump, and the typical rust belt brake line repair it was reliable. It had around 130K when I sold it to him.

I thought the 2.9L had head gasket issues, probably fixed by now, LOL.

Chevy S-10, 1997, 110k plus. @WD. 29-30mpg. 4 cylinder, 5 speed.

I do I-66 or I-95 and the Northern/Southern I-495 daily.

Deer and black-ice have been the issues.

Wipers are now an issue. Needs an A/C recharge. Otherwise, just fed it tires, brakes and fluids over the years.

It has space for one other person, if I have baggage, they I have no other person. :)

where and how should I look?

Craigslist had a handful of Rangers, but I did not get eny emails back so I assume they are gone.

I cannot believe CarMax or other dealers will be carrying old late 80's early 90's Rangers or Toyotas unless they are jacked up tricked out stupid trucks.

Where should I go looking?
Thanks in advance,
David

Car max has very little vehicles over 65K miles on them and very little under 10K. This is the range they have to stay in for the finance folks. I learned this when we got an SUV. We got a Highlander (TOY) it had like 80K on it and was a few years older than they normaly carry but was extra clean and lower miles for the years. It was an 01 and we have had it like 3 years now. It has been a very good vehicle. All i have done is had to replace all 3 O2 sensors a battery and need to put plugs and a T-belt in it.

Look in the papers CL and the sale adds for rangers. I have a 1990 ranger with 290k miles on it and its gets 24mpg at best if i baby it. on the interstate or divining it a bit faster than an old man i get about 22mpg. NO way the older v6 gets 26.
