What is a Tractors Lifespan?

My grandfather bought several John Deere A tractors, both I styled and styled models.

He’s been dead for thirty some years now, and stopped farming in 1959.

I can guarantee you that the thought that Deere would supply Parts thirty years after his death, and sixty years after his retirement played no part whatsoever in his purchase decision.

Truer words have not been spoken in this thread. :D

I've got an old Van Brunt model B grain drill that John Deere still has some parts available for. I think it was made in the 40's. I know that they sold a lot of those old drills but I still think it's pretty darn amazing.

I had a John Deere 140 H-3 garden tractor for 40 years. Can't tell how many hours it had on it because the hour meter quit working. As far as I know it is still running. Sold it for half I paid for it back in 1970.
It had a Kohler engine in it.

- Large scale farmer - run the crap out the equipment for days on end, machine almost a consumable item, comfort and reliability most important, tax savings significant for new equipment

- Rancher - reliability not as important except for hay equipment, used for short stretches (my dad's "big" tractor is used about 200 hours a year), machines are expected to last generations (many ranchers around here are still using JD 4440s as their big tractor), tax savings not as significant

- Hobby farmer - since the goal isn't to make money, it's more like a boat. Do you want a john boat to run up the creek or a wakeboard boat to look cool in?

Between my friend and I we have a variety of old tractors. I've no idea how many hours are on them, some never had an hour meter from the factory. He has a styled John Deere A that has a permanently attached sickle mower and it was built sometimes between 1939 and 1947. I have a John Deere R and they were built from 1949 to 1954. I have a john Deere 70 which was built sometime between 1953 and 1956. My 3010 was built in 1963 and it's the main tractor around his acreage, with a front end loader and three point hitch. He also has a Cockshutt 30 which was built between 1946 and 1957. We have others of course like my John Deere 4630 which is the newest having been built sometime between 1973 and1977. I also bought him a John Deere H one year as a present and they were built between 1939 and 1947.
