Be wary of rental units.

Also, if you are not sure at that price point but you think the tractor is sound, offer considerable less and be prepared to walk away and look for another deal. Offer something like $21,500, stand firm, and walk away if they are not willing to meet your price. You might be surprised if they are looking to clear this unit off their lot, and that saved $2000 can be banked to cover any needed repairs in the future.

I talked to the rental company today and they are going to fix some of the major dings and dents, they are going to include a 72" box scraper, and take the backhoe off and on to check why it is leaning to one side. It was missing the lower 3 point hitch arms that store under the backhoe so they are going to replace those. They do not put wear bars on their front end loader buckets so it did not have one, but at my request they are going to put a new one on the bucket. Once they do all this they are going to let me throughly look over it and it has a 30 day parts and labor guarantee. So I can try it out for the first month and make sure there is nothing wrong with it.

I forgot two more things. Their original asking price was $25,595 and I got them down almost $2,000 to $23,695. They also put new front tires on it.

If it were me, I'd probably walk away from it regardless... even if they fixed the cosmetic damage and sorted out the backhoe, you have to know that rig has lived a hard life and there are likely to be other problems.

If you are a brave and adventuresome sort of fella who decides to buy it anyways in spite of the cautions, I hope it works out for you. Maybe you can come back in 5 years, with 5,000 trouble free hours on it and tell everyone about it.

I went ahead and passed on the deal. It just didn't feel right and I have a feeling whatever they would do to fix it still wouldn't make me feel good about the purchase. I take very good care of any equipment I own and have a hard to buying something that is already in bad shape. I thank all of you for all your input. It was very helpful in my decision and problably steered me away from making a bad decision.

Good for you, think you made the right choice. I've rented a few machines and let me tell you "gentle" does not come to mind. I know I yanked rocks and stumps out with a rental that I would not even bother trying with my 7800...or that if I did, it would take a lot longer for me to do! Running starts into stumps comes to mind! :D

I'd stay away from any rental company sale...that goes for cars too!
