What is "dirty electric"?

Under the specifications it states that there is under frequency protection. I am guessing that the capacitor and auxiliary windings provide this function. Having the wrong or bad capacitor would cause the resonance frequency to be wrong and might give you these strange readings. I will try to research this.

I took the capacator to a elec. motor shop (actually two shops) Both said they thought it was a 80mfd. And it showed good. It is a Dayton capacator, and the way the mounted it, it rubbed the specs off. I am beginning to think like you that it is supposed to have two. My exact specs are not listed there, so just guessing. No, and I wont test it the was they showed there with 240 volts, tea or no tea, or coffee. I have worked on alot of elect equipement and wired a few comerical business and I respect it. I contacted a couple of places that work on gens. but so far you fellows have been alot more knowledgeable than them. The diode question keeps comming up. Some say if it is putting out that much that the diodes are ok. others question them. To get to the diodes the engine and gen set has to be puled out of a enclosed trailer. I eventually may have to do that if every thing leads to a diode being bad.

John:

Although I mentioned them, I agree that the diodes are likely OKay. As for the caps, instead of playing around, why not just order a new set from Leroy Somer. If you have a Dayton cap, it was likely replaced by the prior owner, and may not even be the correct value. Could have been a quick fix, which worked well enough for a set of lights.

I think the capacitor problem could be easily solved by identifying the correct capacitors, then simply installing two new ones. According to the specifications shown in the PDF link you provided, there can only be one of four different capacitors for a 60hz system, such as yours should be unless you are using 50hz.

The following image was taken from the PDF manual. Simply identify your model, then get the correct capacitors which will be between 70-150uf in value with a voltage range exceeding 240 volts (higher is better).

What voltage is the unit wired for,, going by the link you gave it could be 120v or 240v but not both.. So if your intent was to use for home standby I think you have a problem other than the output problems..

It is wired for 240 volts. 120 on each leg. I have tried both legs and get the same readings. From what I see the capacator should be 70mfd. The one on it is a 80 from what a couple elec. shops tested it at. It is a replacement on it, Dayton brand from Granger, marked made in "China" A couple of people have tole me that they thought that if I wanted to raise the voltage that I should go to 100mfd. I want to make sure before I purchase it as they are not cheap.
