What is eating my carrots and potatoes under ground?

Just to post some information....

Moles are meat eaters. They don't eat plants. They tunnel around carrots, potatoes and other root crops and leave tunnels behind. Worms, grubs and insects use those tunnels because they are warm, dark and moist. The moles come back through the tunnels and pick up their dinner.

Voles, on the other hand, will eat vegatable roots and will use mole tunnels to get to them. You can usually tell if you have voles, because there are nickle size holes in the mole tunnels. Moles will plug any holes in their tunnels because they don't like them. Voles will open them because they like to get in and out.

At least, that's the way it was told to me...

Sheesh, and I thought you midwesterners meant steak and ribs when you were discussing meat. I'll be more careful next time I order meatloaf in Indiana.

Update:

I found some silver worm inside one potato. I find these same worms under vehicle tires on concrete especially after rain. Looking for some images to match them to. Could be wire worms...
