Someone said they cut trails or bike paths in the side of gentle hills/slopes. May I have pictures or advice on how to get started. Do you use the hoe???

Up and down. Up and down. That's the way I handle all mowing and bush hog work.

Well, I haven't done it with a machine, but here's a link defining bench cuts: http://www.imba.com/resources/trail_building/contour.html

This is really hard work when doing it by hand, expecially in rooty & rocky terrain.

My plan is to back across the slope, using the hoe to do the benching so the tractor is always on the level ground that's just been reshaped.

Using the bucket for a side hill trail : Note my method is for a small Kubota B7100 Hst. and It needs all the help it can get. That is why I start at the top. Normally one would start at the bottom.

Start at the top and dig in getting a bucket full. Back up and drop dirt on the low side. Keep repeating this till you are level side to side. Then continue forward doing the same always keeping your working area the tractor wheels are on level from side to side. It's a repitcious action and takes time and patience. Use caution when locking rear wheels as locked they have a tendency to go downhill. Always keep the bucket low.

The same method works if you start at the bottom.

If the slope is gentle enough to comfortably ride sideways on it you could use a straight blade or box plade tilted downwards toward the high side of the hill to cut the trail.

Would need to be very careful doing it that way.

Alternatively, if you can start on a flat spot you can use the FEL to cut the trail.

Seems to me either of those would be faster than a backhoe.

I'm not too bright, that's just my bald head. I was thinking in cutting brush. Oppppsise.

I have a slope on my hill that has a small path that I can take my B7500 up when it's dry. I guess it's 50" wide but it's not as wide or level as I want. As soon as it drys up the box blade and FEL will make it a little wider and level it out.

I agree that the loader should be faster than the BH on relatively gentle slopes. The only problem is that it would be difficult to properly shape the backslope with the FEL. I'm guessing on steep sideslopes the FEL would be really tough to use for this application.

Professional trailbuilders typically use walk-behind mini-dozers like the Toro Dingo or Ditch Witch SK500. These still require a fair amount of handwork (or BH) to do final shaping.

I know very little about tractors (so far), but have built a lot of trail. My BX delivery is delayed 2 days because of weather. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
