What is it with kids and dirt piles?

Donny, do you store fire wood in your basement? If so does it cause a bug problem?

I used to keep it inside. Some bugs. I used to wait until it turned a little cold and then start bringing it in. Hopefully the crates will eliminate all of this. Drop a crate off at the backdoor and move it when done. Go get another. I really hate the mess in the house. This should really help out with that. Another problem is the amount of space the wood takes up. In the crates though that is not a problem. When I was digging out in those pictures I just simply moved the crates out of my way. Takes about 15 to 20 mins. They are never in my way now. Move them as I need to. They are heavy though. Just be careful how you handle them. Keep some weight on the back and everything is fine.

Same "problem" with my 3 nephews. I dig a hole with the IH3444 backhoe, they jump into it before I can get it filled with top soil to plant a tree. If I leave a hole open overnight, they jump up the next day, and one says "I'M going to the hole". I just dig one, and let them play in it all day. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

My 3 year old boy thinks any dirtpile in the yard is his. I put in a basketball court this past fall and on the one end I had to feather the yard down to the court as it was higher. Needless to say after tilling it, it was quite soft (ideal for kids). I had thrown out some grass seed to firm up the bank. I come home from work a couple of days later and see holes dug in the bank and my boy as dirty as could be with his 3 year old cousin. I told him I just planted grass seed there and they just dug it all up. His response was "No we didn't daddy, we used our platic rakes and raked it out of our way!!!!" I was laughing so hard I just had to go into the house.

I've had some fruit bins (crates) laying around for years and used them for various things. After getting the tractor and making forks, last season was my first for delivering bins of wood the the front porch. Works great.

I had my girlfriends family, from TOWN, up for a bbq a few weeks ago. They brought 4 teenagers! At one time or another, ALL of them took a turn in my gravel pile!? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

KubotaSteve,
I love that story. Kids come up with some great ideas. They are so smart these days. Much smarter than I was at that age. Keeps me on my toes.

HomeBrew2,
Thanks for the info on the crates. It is so simple I just can't believe I have not tried it earlier. To me, anyway, it is one of those things you see and you just slap yourself in the forehead and say why didn't I think of that?
