A little interesting item that is pretty obvious what it does, but there is something unique about it. At least to me it is, since I've never seen one before.

Got one just like it.

(edit); Other than being able to go either direction, I'm not following ya on the "unique" thing ?

I just never seen or heard of one before, Are you saying yours only goes in one direction?
Handy tool to have, I was fooling around with it today, I found it in customers house, the lady said it was there when she bought the house several years ago.

I have on just like it, don't use it much any more. I now have a electronic device that does the same thing.

So you guys know what it is but I don't want to give the answer yet, maybe there is someone who doesn't know what it is

I'll show a picture of it's original package, that will name it.

if thats what I think it is, we have a much older one.

We have a combo electronic one that does touchless and touch readings.

   / What Is It? #8
I think its a tachometer. Probably a very expensive one when bought new.

   / What Is It? #9
A vibration tachometer? Hard to tell with the pics, but with those you just hold it onto a motor and it magically tells you what rpm it's at. Never used one and I'm probably wrong. Good luck investigating!

I have a couple older, smaller one's with A-C marked on them. These were used to check the cylinder speed on the Allis All Crop combines.

I'm thinking vacuum guage...positive and negative crankcase pressure?

   / What Is It? #12
It is a direct reading tachometer that you can hold against the end of a rotating shaft to determine its RPM.

   / What Is It? #13
Ahhhh, gotcha. I thought the rubber on the end was a cap covering the inlet fitting.

the one we have has a clock work dial on it, and you have to use your watch and gount how many times it turns around in like 10 secs, I think each turn of the dial is 100 revolutions. This thing looks to be 2x as old the the one the op posted, and still has the factory cardboard box!

Yup, a hand held tach. Apparently more common than I thought.

Works fine, was trying it on my pto shaft and read right between 5 and 600, when the engine tach was set to pto speed. Works both directions up to 3500.

Original coffee can package and instructions, doesn't appear to be to old, maybe from the late 60's early 70's

Cell phone pic quality, sorry.

Ill try and post a pic of my old one.

I found one when we sold the inlaw's farm house, garage, and barn. Mine is only about half that diameter and a good bit longer. It has a pointed rubber tip, probably to fit into the dimple on the end of the shaft. It is in the original Delco cardboard tube. I don't recall if the directions are there or not. In the drawer right below it was an old John Deere pto air pump that he had for his old B JD. Neat old stuff. I never heard of a pto air pump before that. I got both of them in the basement workshop. I enjoy old things.

DJ54:

That brings back memories of growing up on a South Georgia farm in the 1950's with a pull-type, pto powered Allis Chalmers combine. But I can't recall whether the instrument registered actual rpm or just revolutions that you measured for a certain time.

I can recall that combining oats was the most miserable job on the farm because that chaff itched so bad.

Farmerford:
These show RPM's. Used them on our older IH's that do not have a tach. We were pretty high tech... Put a mark along side the throttle with a "magic marker", @ 540 rpm., LOL...

KubotaSam got it!. I have the exact same item. It was supplied with different tips, but was made to read the RPM of any rotating shaft.
