I believe that is a racoon trap. They stick their paws in the hole, and it holds the paw while preventing the from chewing it off...

They run around here like packs of wild monkeys! Cute to watch. Good luck to you if they get in your attic, though.

Never feed cute baby wild racoons. Trust me. They grow up into aggressive adults that will damage a home trying to get the food out.

I had to deal with them when working on a cattle ranch in Montana years ago... of course i thought they were cute, so i fed them all the time

i just never told the boss.
