What is reasonable to ask for when negotiating?

What would be wrong with just being straightforward and gentle.

"I like this tractor, and am ready to buy one. Another dealer offered me a slightly better price, but you have been considerate and helpful to me. Other things I am considering are a hydraulic top link, a set of filters for first service & toothbar for bucket. If I seal the deal with you on the tractor, can you work with me on these extras?"

That's not a demand, but an opening to find win/win. That dealer sounds decent. I wouldn't worry about the hours or faded knob.

I was even more straight forward. I knew exactly what I wanted w/options. Visited the three closest Kubota dealers in my area with copies of identical paper work in hand. I asked each for their "bottom line price" and told each one I would be ordering a tractor that same week from whom ever had the lowest price.

I didn't care how they arrived at that price, juggle the figures all they wanted, it was the bottom line, delivered price I would be concentrating on. Well, one dealer called me that same evening and also sent his quote along by e-mail. Number two dealer contacted me by phone a couple of days later with a quote and said if his quote was higher he may be able to match any other quote that I would receive. (Not good enough for me, I don't play those games). I never heard from dealer number 3.

As it turned out the dealer that had called me that same night, had the lowest price and as luck would have it, he also made a good impression on me when I first visited his dealership that morning. He owns and operates a family owned well thriving dealership. My new tractor is scheduled to be delivered within a few days.

Oh, his price amounted to over 10% off the manufacturer's list price. Closer to 11% off with incentives and I received what I considered an excellent trade-in price for my well maintained L4200 which was always kept under cover when not in use.

Oldoak I'm the same way, matching a price that I had to show you means you are not getting my money. Show me your best offer, and if it's best at the next place..... It sucks to be you.

Some people get insulted when you lowball them. Others, ready to make a sale, brush it off and continue with the "haggling". Go high you can always come down. Going low initially limits your position and net gain potential.
