In the same vein, women who are somehow surprised when we reach our destination, and only then start gathering their piles of crap to get out of the car.

Listen, if I’m the one driving, unable to gather my stuff to get out of the car in advance, then why am I standing next to the car several minutes, waiting for you to get out, when we arrive? I’ve grabbed my keys, stowed my sunglasses, gotten my jacket on, stuffed my wallet in my pocket… and she’s what… putting on her shoes?!?

Very annoying when they’re the one who’ve already made you late getting to dinner or a show, in the first place, and now you wait some more. And it’s not just my wife, but almost every female I’ve ever known.
Just don't do like Everybody loves Raymond's dad and AIS your wife.
My patience with my DW is rewarded in other ways___.
My pet peeve is someone who's always grousing about something.

…..Women who wait until the entire order is rung up, to then, decide to unzip their pocketbook, and start rummaging around it, looking for their checkbook.
Then you wait some more while they start to fill out the check with the supermarket name,….
Couldn’t have done 90% of it while it was being rung up.
😖
Amen!!! You didn't know that you were going to write a check?

I'm not seeing it. Seems to me the trend is in the other direction, less customer service in exchange for slightly lower prices.
I think it’s going both directions, following our ever-widening gap between the upper and lower classes, and destruction of our middle class.

Self-serve gas has been the norm for decades for example.

Self-serve gas may not be a good example, as it has existed so long as to span both of the conflicting eras I cited in my example, and I personally find self-service preferable to waiting on an attendant who is trying to service 4 cars at a time, or bangs the gas nozzle into the side of your expensive car. At the few stations that have both, I always choose the Self-Serve island, and would probably even pay extra to do it.

The self-checkout grocery is a good example, being a more recent phenomenon. But more in support of what I’m saying than against it, as some of us intentionally choose more expensive stores with abundant cashiers, over less expensive stores favoring self-checkout.

That is one of the advantages of living in/near a city where you have those choices. Out here in the sticks you're pretty much stuck with what's nearby unless you want to drive a long way.

Another pet peeve of mine, is people that stand in line at a fast food joint, talking on their phone or BSing with the others in their group, and then when they get to the counter to order, they can't decide what the hell they want. Grrrrr!

Men need a shirt...grab one, pay, leave.5 minutes.
Women need a shirt...try on 20, five make their behind look too fat, two don't match their 300 pairs of shoes, etc. Then they buy the first one they tried on which hangs in closet 10 years never worn ends up at Goodwill.

You are told to protect your Social Security Number with your life and never share it with anyone.

YEAH RIGHT; not only is my SS number on the dark web with all my other info "though no fault of mine", but you have to give your SS number to get health care, drivers license, credit, buy a house, car, etc. and expect them to protect it.
