You mean, the companies who sell and service those warranties aren't charities?

I go as far as to say some have built in a few gotchas for added revenue.

My Dad (rip) worked at Sears & I always wanted him to write a book.
One day a customer was arguing with a Sears salesman about something he bought and warranty expired. Dad said the customer led the salesman by his tie to the front of the store and pointed to a big banner that said:
"Satisfaction guaranteed or your money back".
Customer said "See that? Well I'm not satisfied!".

I could never work customer service. I was waiting in line to check out at a Sears as the customer in front of me tried to return a pair of jeans they had gotten for Christmas. Problem was that they were Kmart's store brand, and this was before the merge. She insisted they had come from there and became abusive to the clerk and started slamming Sears.
I have always regretted not speaking up and telling her "You are either mistaken or a liar. She has to be nice to you. I don't and you're wasting my time."

I'm in the same thought as Scootr, I bought an extended warranty only once, and that was for a TV at Costco. It actually paid off, 2 months left on the extended warranty the backlight would occasionally go out.
Called the warranty company expecting the runaround. Nope, local outfit called me and asked what was wrong and I told them the brand and the problem andthat it was only intermittent . They said they knew the problem, ordered parts, a week later they picked up the TV that was working at the time, which was a 50km trip for them and brought it back three days later.
Actually I lied. I bought an over/under washer dryer from Costco a year or so ago and because of the good experience with the previous extended warranty I bought one for the set. Only one I could get was a d**n digital control which I despise, gimme the ole 'clcck, click' rotary dial any day. One day after it's delivered, guess what comes up on their site.... grrrrr.

I've always worked for companies that make technical products, either robotics systems used for automated assembly, or long-haul fiber transponders, or very large scale RF & microwave transmitters. In each of these companies, I've noticed no one ever calls customer service to say, "hey... just wanted to let you know, everything is going great!"

Literally, every time the customer service manager hears an outside line ring, he already knows there's going to be a pissed-off customer on the other end of that line. It takes a unique sort of individual to deal with that, day after day, year after year.

I realize that they routinely get nothing but crap, and that it isn't the customer service person's fault if something doesn't work right.

So I do my very best to be nice and polite, and ignore the often dumb comments they read from their lists. Nine times out of 10 it leads to getting service above and beyond what I expected. My expectations might be low, but still.

This morning I declined getting reimbursed for a $450 purchase while also getting to keep the product. My goal is to return the package, not to get something for free, and potentially get someone in trouble.

With some luck I'll catch the UPS guy today, again, and refuse delivery, again.

Sears; they tried to become Walmart and crashed and burned...."Die Hard"....but it's a trend for most of these once go to places for something that was not always mass-marketed.(before the China syndrome) and made in the USA ..

they were a pretty competitive market with reasonable pricing on many household and outdoor products. I have a 54 year old Sears Coldspot refrig on my back deck...still doing what it was designed to do...keeping things cold. Nothing like a cold beer on a hot day. (and a few sodas for the grand-kids)

It was strange how Sears went downhill and then the CEO and a group of investors bought out the parts. Reselling some , like Craftsman and making a tidy profit.

A neighbor just texted me. How sad all the things we enjoyed years ago are fading away.
K&W Cafeteria closing after 88 years in business. We used to drive 40 miles to one in Roanoke. They had this special two dinners for something like $28.95.
Two entrees, two veg, bread, drink, dessert.
Everything was homemade.
