I want to construct a deer fence around my garden 8 foot high. So that means approximately 30-36 inches underground making the fence posts 10.5 to 11 feet in length. What is the cheapest price in either galvanized chain link post or wooden that you are aware of?

Pressure treated 4x4s are quite pricey these days, but then everything is. What type fence are you putting in? My garden area is small, but I put 10 foot 4x4s at the corners. I then installed five ft hog wire, and above that I used single strands of regular wire (you could use barb) to give it more height. So far it has worked for deer....Now chipmunks, squirrels, birds, raccoons, rats....that's a different story.

Probably the best pricing you can get, especially if you need a lot of them, is to get a bundle of 21' CQ20 or struc tubing in 1.625" and cut them in half making 2 posts. Get a few sticks of 2.375" for corners and terminals.

I wanted to have an 8 foot fence to keep deer out. A neighbor has 7 foot they are going over. The cheapest I can find for any posts that will support a fence is $17 per 4" x 4" x 12' treated posts. I know that is overkill, but chain link posts are astronomical and I can't find any used ones at a construction company as some people had suggested. I want to go with 2 48" fencing smaller holes than hog fencing to keep small animals out such as raccoon. I would overlap them slightly by about 4 inches and then on the very top put one electric wire to keep coon from climbing over. On the very bottom I would get some 2 foot chicken wire to go around to keep small animals like baby rabbits out.

2 2x4's laminated together would be about $4-$5 cheaper than a single 4x4.

Around here- if they are not deep enough, the frost heaves them out of the ground after a few years- as much as 6" a year. I try to put them in 4-5'. 5' is best. Ask around how deep your frost goes, then go below. That will tell you what you need for a post.
I just put a 2 strand electric fence around our garden on steel posts and it is working for now.
