Better too long than too short. I've bought several pairs of chains over the years. They have always been too long. Very easy to shorten. Very hard to lengthen.
Certainly I too have had tire chains that I could fit either by welding in links or removing links. TSC sells special tools to add and remove links.
With these studded Trygg chains, the studded portion consists of a series of diamond shaped sections that need to just meet as they come around the tire. Too long and there is no where to connect the links which connect the diamond pattern. All links are welded so using the TSC tool is not possible to alter the chains.
If you look closely at this photo, you can see the smaller diamond shape at the rear mid height of the tire. With this uneven diamond pattern on the tire, the chains were very rough on the road as the pattern of the chains riding on the pavement changed once per revolution.
At the distributor, they adjusted the size of each diamond and removed one full diamond to get a proper fit. These chains, including the side chains are so hard a 3 foot pair of new bolt cutters cannot break them. I had resorted to using an angle grinder with a cut off wheel but it was very soon apparent that this was beyond the normally expected "fitting," of many less expensive ladder style chains.
To sixdogs, the issue arose became the tires Kubota provided did not meet internationally accept standards as to size. The inner diameter fit the wheels. The front rear/ratio seems ok as the drive line is not winding up. If I check the diameter of the front tires they too must be deviating from the Tire and Rim Association standards.
The tire size only became an issue when I bought chains which were designed to not require fitting.
