It is impossible for the rear tires (loaded and with backhoe in place) to come off the ground going uphill...this is a BX25D
My FEL will easily lift the rear tires off the ground with BH on.

The FEL is not in play here as it is in the up position and I am using a trailer ball mounted to the front of the tractor.
I am wondering how you can perform this trick?
Does not sound logically possible...would not the rear tires simply pivot in place as the FEL is raising the front?

My tractor lacked the muscle to lift the rear wheels off the ground but if you lifted the front wheels high enough the backhoe would hit the ground. The loader also lacked the travel to do this. You had to be pushing down on a brush pile or something. I'm not sure why any of this is useful to the problem though.

If you're ever in the scenario again, it would be great if you could get some video so we can all see it.

Technically, if the HST is overwhelmed, it could make a difference switching to 4 wheel drive because you are no longer pushing the front wheels but rather driving with them. The load on the pump theoretically doesn't change, it is just distributed between four wheels instead of two, however, the physical resistance on the ground can be reduced by driving with 4 instead of 2.

The trailer weight is pushing down on the front of the tractor. Just like a teter toter, that lifts the back end to some degree. If the back has little weight/traction, that means the reaes will slip & spin. Putting it in 4wd fixes things as that's where the traction is.

Yeah - I'd say this and maybe tires spinning on the rim. Check your air pressure. 4wd is good to use when carrying a load. Asphalt will wear out the front tires quicker, but your tractor drifting backwards and rolling over is more expensive than new front tires.

Absolutely! 4wd from now on for sure but like I said this was an isolated task and it happened on dry pavement...puzzling.

I don't want to say the word out loud but please tell us you were not moving or using any p a l l e t s when this occurred...

These tractors don't have a brake on each wheel like a car, the brakes are on the driveline. You'll only have brakes on the rear wheels when in 2wd which is why it's important to be in 4wd if you're dealing with any weight--towing, in the bucket, or otherwise.
