AKfish, thanks. I heard nothing that sounded strange at the time. I'm trusting that I did no damage.
The other thing was that the hydraulic fluid level was below the add on the dip stick. It had not been changed in 6 years and it was not changed at the 50 hr point as the manual says. 2 days ago I drained it (I also drained the motor oil and changed the filter etc), changed the filter, cleaned the suction screen and added 5.5 gallons of the low viscosity Hy-Gaurd (not cheep stuff but I found a place on line with the best price, the local dealer was twice as much). before draining it I made sure that all the cylinders including the bh, which was still connected were completely retracted in order to make sure as much of the oil was in the tractor as possible. Even then it was still below the dip stick when cold. I have added the 5.5 gallons but now it shows up that I have to add on the dipstick. I am guessing that with the bh connected that that takes some oil to fill the lines, valves and cylinders so that is where I will need to add a little extra to get it to the operating range. Also if it was that low would it make it so it did not have as much power as I assume it would have? My fathers old IH 330 utility's hydraulics always seemed to lose power and go slow when the hydraulic fluid was low.
