what is this oil cap for?

Hi,
I was just cleaning out my air filter and saw this oil cap. It says "OIL" on it and does not have a dip stick attached. So, what is it for and what do I put in, also, how much. I can look inside and see gears, (that look a bit dry).

That is where you fill your crankcase when you change your oil. Most tractor engines have a filler cap on the top of the valve cover too. My Kubota 5030 has the same filler as well.

My western Star with a 3406 caterpillar has a fill on the top of the valve cover as well as on in front of the timing cover.

As far as the gears looking dry, well, start the engine with the cap off and you will see that there is plenty of oil moving around in there. that is, if your oil level is full.
