For good measure, i found out that the rear bolt to the pin broke off. Oh, that's going to be fun to remove. :)

At least its the bolt that broke, on mine the casting where the bolt screws in was broke from the previous owner.
They repaired it and its been fine for the 23 years I have owned it.

Not bad if you have a welder. Even better when it's in cast iron. Just weld a nut to it and unscrew the remainder of the bolt.(y)

Extracting the broken bolt was far easier than I ever imagined. I bought a left hand 3/8th drill bit. $11 dollars and a screw extractor $8. Used a punch to set the bit, and got 1/4 inch in to the broken bolt. Then it just backed out using a flat head screw driver. I never even had to use the extractor. And even though I was working at an angle the drill bit never touched the internal threading. I really thought this was going to be a nightmare, and it turned out to be nothing at all.
I will say that one should be careful if they are use to only useing a FEL with an three point attachment as a counter weight. In my case the three point pin broke so I tried to use the FEL with out the counter weight. This was extremely dangerous and stupid, and I need to buy a new set of pants. :)

I found that the replacement part, didn't completely seat. I don't think the original would seat also. And this was the issue. The pin would rock and flex the side straps and they eventually failed. I ground down the replacement pin, on its inner shaft, so that it would set flat and not fatigue the straps with any sort of rocking forces.

Did the weld the casting? Mine is broken there as well and I need to figure out the best way to put the pin back on.

  1. The Hub is symmetrical so I could swap left for right
  2. I could weld the casting, but I've heard that's a problem - want feedback on that
  3. I could make a new custom pin that uses the holes on both sides of the hub

Design for Custom Pin Mount to be held in with 3 bolts instead of 2

Mild steel, remove it, Vee it out on both sides (remove the paint and degrease it with a good degreaser like say Purple Power, rinse thoroughly let dry and Vee it in both sides to the root and then MIG it with solid wire and Globular Transfer (which is high amperage MIG, over 200 amps with shielding gas (75-25 or straight argon), multiple pass until filled and grind it off smooth, repaint it and call it good). You will have to secure it in alignment on something square and solid, like a welding table.

Take about 15 minutes, start to finish.

Do you have any photos of the repair by any chance?
