Thanks, that site says 3-4" deep with a 3ft one. That's behind my Massive ferguson 16hp MF1010. Based on the pic I'd guess it's about 3ft wide. soil, during spring is soft. Almost zero clay here. Is that deep enough to be useful, or should I just use a tiller and forget it?

I don't think the sweeps will replace a tiller to work up ground in the spring. Usually used to sweep through worked-up and planted ground to kill weeds and as mentioned, hill up around plants.

Most likely you would use this after the ground has been tilled....so sounds like a perfect implement for your tractor. However if you are thinking you are going to bust sod with this....I would pass.

You might be able to replace the sweeps with chisel points for deeper cultivation or breaking up the soil prior to tilling.

More like beenthere described - it's to kill weeds after your crop is planted and growing. You could probably add some discs to use it as a hiller if that's what you want to do. I think AgriSupply has what you need.

OK I think it's slowly seeping through my skull. Prob not something I really need or that will do what I really need. It was listed for $25 and I wanted to find out exactly what it did. Pretty new to this impliment business.

Heck, now that I think about it, the 3point hardware is prob worth more than $25.

If you wanted to sod-bust you could remove the 2 outer shovels.....

If you're a welder at all, your right about the 3pt mount being more that 25$.

I'd grab it for 25$.

Yep, for $25 I'd get it too.

I have one similar (call it a tool bar) that I bought prolly 35 years ago for $5. It has an 8' 3x3" solid steel square (not tubing) bar with the 3pt attaching points. Always thought I'd find a use for it, but not (yet) !!

Sweeps don't "hill up" anything. They lift the soil and drop it down again, leaving a small trench where the shank passes. They kill weeds by cutting the roots off (if the roots are deep enough) and then by disturbing the soil enough that the remaining roots on the plants dry out and the plants die. There's an optimum speed you travel at that works best with a cultivator with sweeps on. IIRC we liked to go around 5 1/2 to 6 mph, back when I was on the farm.

Sounds about right based on my not always correct memory. The tillage calculator shows a ground speed of 5-7.5 mph for field cultivators, but that may be based on chisel points.

I don't have any idea what this implement was set up to do but cultivate or plow the garden with, wasn't it.
You would plow right down the center of your row of plants with the center plow foot.

If it had about a 4" sweep you could use it to lay off your rows in the garden. Use this furrow to plant your seeds.

That is what I would call a "row crop cultivator." Imagine a traditional crop planted in rows, like cotton, and this would be used (after the shanks are adjusted to the proper widths) down the rows to cut weeds and trash.

Can it be used for other things? Yes. Any old Ford 8n/2n/9n would pull that thing all day long and not know it was there. These are 25 engine horsepower (or so) machines. A bit different from many of today's 25hp tractors but gives an idea.

Someone mentioned using it as a chisel/ripper and you could do that. Within reason. For $25, if you have any feasible use for it, I'd say pick it up. Heck, it'd make great yard decoration if nothing else. I've reclaimed and given/sold all manner of old implements over the years for people wanting something to put in the yard.
