What is this?

Good grief, I took that thing off the day I got my tractor in 2008 and it is floating around in the shop someplace. I see no reason to cover the pto shaft:confused3:

When I bought my current tractor it had 1972 hours on it and the PTO cap was still on it. The tractor had been used for boxblading pretty much its entire life. By the looks of the PTO shaft I don't think it had ever had anything on it. I took the cap off the first time I needed to use the bush hog. I threw it in the recycle barrel when I took it off.

I guess the PO has (or lost) the cover that came with my Kioti. Not a problem so far because I always have a mower or a bush hog on the PTO shaft. But I can see the value of a cover (to keep dirt out of the grease) if I was dragging a blade/box blade or disks.

I still use mine too. In colder weather, if I don't have the blower on the back, I will turn the PTO on as part of my warm up time to get the hydraulic oil flowing and warming while the tractor is sitting at an idle. I leave the cover on just in case. Not that they'd go anywhere near the tractor, especially when it's running, but 3 small kids around means I do whatever I can to keep things safe.

I leave my cover on for safety too. Here's why:
A friend of mine had a buddy riding on the back of his old tractor a few years ago. They were moving some logs out of a woods trail and the guy's jeans got snagged up by the revolving rear PTO... in an instant, his foot was ripped off above the ankle.
Those covers serve a purpose, sometimes forgiving improper operation of the tractor.

I had one and used it for the first 500 hours. About to hit 900 and have not seen it for a while. Not real worried about it.

I removed the mower and put the new (to me) box blade on yesterday. I put the PTO cover on. Figured it would help keep it clean. I've never seen one before, but in retrospect it's a good idea and I'm glad I've got it.

Thanks for the info on what it was. I thought it was something that had fallen off in the cab.

I have to ask..why was it engaged and spinning?

.... that is the same question the operator of the tractor has to revisit every day for the rest of his life. Chalk it up to human error.
