What IS this?

Anybody know what this thing is? We found it in an old barn we were tearing down. It's green glass, about 10" diameter with a steel/iron band around the middle with "ears" as if for hanging. The "cap" has a spring-loaded stem that apparently is designed to seal unless it is pushed in or wiggled. We're thinking some sort of waterer?

Never seen one in glass. It resembles a tank that was used for kerosene stoves back in the day. Fill with fuel, invert into fitting and the stem allows the fuel to flow. I somehow doubt that is what it is as being made of glass doesn't sound very safe to me.

Turmkey is right! MY mom used to have a 2 burner portable oil stove and it had a jug just like that.

What about the kerosene lamps that rer made of glass? we used them until 1947 when we got electicity.

I would have guessed a lightning arrestor. It might be mounted on the roof of a barn with copper wire trailing down the side. Just a guess though.
