Take a gander at the Cub GT 2523, you can get it for a shade under $4000.00. 23HP kohler, very heavy duty cast iron transmissiom with spin on filters for trans and motor. And that includes 54' belly mower. Last mower/tractor you should ever need. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

The 2000 and above CC's are definitely lots of machine for the money and really tough to beat IMHO. Their commercial equipment is very good as well.

When choosing a favorite brand as the thread title requests, CC is probably it for me although there are many other good ones. CC gives lots of machine for the money.

What dilutes the CC name IMHO is the use of the name on such MTD items as the RZT and the 1xxx series. These exact same units are sold as MTD or White with a different badge and color. IMHO this is poor marketing. Keep your premium brand name premium and seel the department store stuff under a different name.

BTW, I totally agree with rainbows recommendation FWIW.

Have a great day,
Doc

If you are saying that the 1xxx series CC is made by MTD, then it would make sense to me as to why Consumer Reports rated the 1xxx series of CC as being the worst in reliability. Dead last. There are hundreds of thousands of people who read those reports, whether you agree with them or not. Having the Cub Cadet name dead last in a reliability category has to have cost CC some sales and put a dent in their reputation. Why don't they drop MTD and make their own mower in that size?? It seems that they have to know that their name is taking a hit.

It ranked 2nd to JD in quality, then NEXT to last in reliability. The surveys only test a limited number of people, so it does not add up. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Some one who didn't know any better because they didn't compare tractors and prices.

it was also sold as a Yard Man

Thanks Bob, I knew MTD built Yard Man. Was unaware that they built for the Craftsman label.

Bczoom,
I mentioned the Simplicity because it was on the original poster's list of 4 tractors he was looking at. "Here goes... Cub Cadet, Simplicity, Craftsman, Kubota." He wanted in put on these and I gave my opinion. I still think the Simplicitys are a good value as are the Cub Cadets above the 1000 series. I really like Deere products, but they weren't on his list. Isn't it great to have so many good choices?

I have emailed Cub Cadet customer support to ask them about MTD making mowers for Craftsman. Maybe they can settle this. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Rainbow6, Hey, you're right about Cub Cadet only being rated as the second to worst reliable tractor tested; since I last saw a report somehow Toro slipped in under them. I suppose your theory on a limited number of people reporting on their Cub Cadets is relative to what you want to consider "limited". The latest survey for their reliability had between 13,000 and 14,000 people reply. I don't know how many lawn tractors they sold in that size range, but to me I'm comfortable with it being a pretty good sampling. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Here is a list of manufacturers that makes products for Sears. If you look at the model number, the first three digits will tell you who makes it for Sears. For ex. 143.xxxxx is a engine made by Tecumseh. Hope this clears things up a bit. BTW if you take that MN to http://www3.sears.com/ you will be able to get a parts breakdown for the item. The part numbers for a Tecumseh engine are Tecumseh numbers & can be bought from any Tecumseh dealer using those same numbers.
