About Google News

Seems to be your beef is with the news media in general, not news.google.com, which just presents a condensed view of what the media is reporting on.

Maybe thats what it is. I have read the link you supplied many times in the past. I have emailed them half a dozen times about just that. I have relied on Google for a bulk of my news for several years. It's been the last 6 months that get me questioning the link you post. If in fact it is still based on an algortihm, then perhaps it is purely coincidence that we see more Washington Post news then perhaps any other source. I used to like the diversity of papers and topics Google supported, I think that has changed. The Post would not be my paper of choice for news. Since Google is based out of the SF Bay area, it would not suprise me that it would have some flavor to it.

"Google's alogorithm seems to have gone haywire." Are you sure? I would argue that its delivering what they want...but maybe I am being cynical.

"I would argue about the Post's objectiveness." Gosh, how can you say that? If its printed it must be true! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I tend to have an odd mix of resources so I end up with what I think is a spectrum of bias. WSJ, CSM, Reuters and Fox. Over the last year I have been leaning towards Fox for most of my news.

I can understand your views on the Guardian, it always has and always will be biased, but not so sure on the bbc. Its independence from commercial pressure is very important. The BBC operates under a Royal Charter, that means it has to be strongly independent of the government and all other pressure groups with a clear mandate to educate and inform the public. If that means going against conventional wisdom so be it For instance, during the Falklands War it referred to the UK troops not as "our troops" but as " British troops". To have done so would have compromised their independence.
The problem with news delivery at the moment is the economics. For the networks the wrong people watch the news, we are outside their beloved demographics hence the need to economize and to rely heavily on fed information. Most newscasts are talking heads delivering news that they know will appeal to their viewers.
I'm not denying that the BBC has made mistakes during the last couple of years and perhaps they take the ratings too seriously, but as a source of thought provoking news I still believe they do a great job.

Umm, I use the Washington Post and CNN and NPR too ... I find it advantageous to know one's enemy ... intimately.

No, they didn't use the term "our troops" for fear of offending part of their international audience. It's the same reason they didn't use the term "terrorist", rather they used the term "bomber".

I do. I also check out the Drudge report but use Fox for my primary day-to-day stuff for quick news.

My best on-line news source is Junkman. He sends me all kinds of news stories, and other interesting tidbits that I never seem to see or find on my own. Should be paying him like I do satellite TV I guess. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
