For most of my life, we've had a creek that crosses our driveway that is susceptible to flooding, so that saying always made perfect sense to me.

Another one is, "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth." A young horse has short front teeth that come out perpendicular to the jaw. As the horse gets old, the front teeth get longer, and they are angled towards the front of the mouth.

It would be rude to "look a gift horse in the mouth" to assess its age and value. You should just say, "Thank you for the horse."

Of course, it's an old saying from a time when any horse has value. If nothing else, it could help feed the family over winter.

That last one I did understand, probably from growing up around my father and grandfather who farmed with horses until after the depression.

Or it could be just from watching Gunsmoke and Little House on the Prairie.

I will never forget a friend, sitting around on a saturday watching wrestling, playing with his rifle scope. Something possessed him to open it, and good thing because he found a cob web in there that he poked out with his finger. The rectical was a bent cartoonish thing after that. lol
