Just bought a 2001 4x4 JD 790 w/FEL and want to be prepared in case something like an engine fire starts up out in the middle of nowhere, like if I'm using it at my hunt club. What is a good brand to use that can be attached to a tractor easily. I guess I want a dry chemical unit?? Also, where do you mount yours at? I see a few tractors with it mounted on the ROPS. I realize you're not supposed to modify the ROPS so I guess there are brackets available that wrap around the ROPS?? Thanks for your comments....

I mounted mine to the ROPS with u-bolts. It's an ABC type extinguisher.

From what i remember when i attended the community emergency response team classes, your best bet is to get the all purpose, ABC class. Its what I have on my rops. It came with a mount for wall, I used wire to hold mount to ROPS and then mount extinguisier in that.
You need A due to combustible materials such as paper, wood, cardboard, and most plastics.
Class B fires involve flammable or combustible liquids such as gasoline, kerosene, grease, diesel and oil.
Class C fires involve electrical equipment, such as appliances, wiring, circuit breakers and outlets.
The all purpose ABC ones usually emits a yellow sticky stuff when used.

Yeah, I got the ABC extinguishers.
I mounted 2 of them, one on each fel arm bracket so I wouldn't have to run around the tractor.

I would suggest a metal headed, 5lb, Stored Pressure, ABC with a gauge.

Plastic headed units generally cannot be serviced.

Solo, Look at your extinguisher again, I believe you have a BC (sodium Bicarb) unit.

As Solo showed, U-bolts etc. can be a good work around, or even the heavy duty ty-wraps / steel ties.

You can use stainless steel hose clamps to secure the fire extinguisher's mounting bracket to the roll bar. I had to secure the safety release pin with a tiny plastic wire tie after it got pulled out by a wayward tree branch while bush-hogging.

Mine came on the tractor when I purchased it, and is easily accessible. It is mount on the inside of the ROPS. Nope, that isn't right either. A piece of pvc is mounted on the inside of the ROPS, with hose clamps, and the fire extinguisher is just dropped into it. The pvc is long enough that it covers the handle/valve/guage. The pipe is capped on the bottom. I don't have to worry about limbs catching it and pulling the pin, or worse.

One thing to remember to do with any vehicle/tractor mounted fire extinguisher is that the constant vibration and motion can cause the powder-like dry chemical in most extinguishers to eventually settle into a solid. The solution is simple. Once or twice a year take the extinguisher out of its mount and shake the heck out of it (like a paint can) to aggitate the powder and loosen it up.

Fire extinguishers are only good if they work...and you know how to use them.

I like an ABC extinguisher on the rops upright. perhaps a piece of masking tape over the spout to keep bugs like dirt/mud daubbers out.

Sorry about the off topic question, but...Rob, can you tell me about your rifle scabbard mounted on the other side of your extinguisher? What brand is it? Does the scope stay aligned after being in the scabbard on a bouncing tractor? I had thought about doing the same thing, and was wondering about how well a scope would stay accurate in a mounted scabbard. Have you used it on an ATV?

Thanks!
